HELP! something fell off my wifes van and i dont know what it is.

At first I thought it was the tensioner pully but the serpentine belt is still in place. Whatever this is has a bearing in it that looks to have seized but I have no idea what this is... please tell me what it is and that it will be easy to fix. This is on a 95 GMC Safari

well, now that there is more daylight I found where it came from...its the pully from below the alternator and it looks like it damaged the bracket that it was on. The nut is gone (sheared off) and the spindle that the bearing rode on is messed up.

So next question is, how hard is it to replace this bracket? and will ones off of different year models work?

I could probably see the pics if I didn't have this stupid banner on the top half of my screen
Looks like it's probably the muffler bearing, I wouldn't drive with out it. \:D/
Seriously looks like an idler pulley or somewhere up front.

WB, neither link works for me.

Dow, my van is an 89, so I have a different serp belt setup. However, the tensioner pulley began to make noise. It wasn't much, but I decided to look into it. What I found was that the bearing in the tensioner pulley was getting very sloppy and was the source of the noise. I replaced the bearing--got the part number of the old bearing--and pressed it into the pulley. Very easy to do; it cost around $5 for the bearing. However, Autozone had a new tensioner arm, with spring and pulley, for around $20.
I think I'd look into the aftermarket before going to a dealer.

Well, it seems the van gods are mad at me again.....

the part in the picture above is the pulley that is attached to the alternator bracket. the bearing seized and sheared itself off of the bracket...and that means get another alternator bracket.

call the dealership, $110 and in stock. Go pick it up. Stop by the parts store and pick up a new starter for the same van (old one has been having issues) go back home.

start tearing into the engine cavity, take out the air box, and the hose behind it, take the top fan shroud out. and I actually managed to get the alternator bracket loose without much problem (thanks Air ratchet!)

Dad shows up to help.

Get the bracket out and pull the alternator off of it (notice its missing one support bolt in the back of the alt, and actually find one in my parts bin that fits, how lucky is that?) put the alt in the new bracket and reinstall it in the van. get the fan belt put back on, put the fan shroud back in, put the airbox in. start the van, everything looks good.

Notice that the drivers side door handle is breaking, it works but will need to be repaced soon. None of the parts houses have it in stock will have to be ordered.

Jack up the van to get at the starter, drop the old starter, move the heat shield to the new starter and reinstall starter. Test, ahhh..much better than before. While under the van we notice some serious damage to one of the rear tires, wearing badly and showing cord on the inside.

Leave the house and go to Manny Jack and Moes, purchase two new tires and since the van was due for an oil change, have that done as well.

Leave MJMs to take dad back to his house. When we get to the house we hear a dinging sound coming from inder the hood, sounded like a couple of pipes hitting each other. We check and see that the fan shroud has shifted and the fan is hitting it, when we puch the shroud to the side hte sound stops.

Readjust fan shroud and the dinging noise is gone. we're satisfied with the outcome of a days work and then we hear...the engine knocking, a deep internal knock, the knock of doom, the sound of a knocking rod...

The van is staying the weekend at dads and he is going to take it to his mech monday for a better diagnosis.

This really sucks after putting $400 into the van to have this happen. Especially when cash is short.

I guess if the engine is going, i'm not going to have to worry about that door handle...

Did they put oil back in when they did the oil change? ](*,) I was gonna comment though that I replaced the same bracket on my 95 and I believe it came from a 93 CPI motored van. I got mine from Lockdoc so he would know for sure. This won't help you but it may help someone else down the road.

Yea, they put oil back in =D>

And the dealship had cross referenced the bracket and said it was the same from at least 92 to 95

#-o #-o WOW!! You didn't run over some old gypsy with your van did you??!?! Sounds like someone put a curse on it.

Hope it all works out for the better and it's not the "deathknock" you hear in your engine.
