Adjusting Handle on Side Sliding Door

This is more of an annoyance that a really big problem. When the sliding door is all the way open it latches down at the botton, but when it comes time to close it, we have to be very precise and squeeze the handle to get the latch part all the way disengaged, or use the inside door handle.

Looking at it I noticed that it uses a cable between the door handle and the latch, and I was wondering if that may have stretched a bit over time, and if so, can it be adjusted?

I had this problem myself. I pulled the cable forward a little from the latch at the bottom (in the track) and duct taped the slack so it was tensioned a little better. That was over a year and a half ago, and it still works today.

May not be the coolest or most attractive solution, but it worked for me.

I also would think that you could use a fishing weight.

Pull the cable and add tension until it's tight, and then add a fishing weight right after the catch, tighten and see if it works.

If I had fishing weights I'd probably try it.
