Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

The van is right around 40-45k on it since I did the swap. The army surplus injection pump I put on it is starting to blow white smoke when it is hot so it is time to put the stock pump back on it. I actually have only put 400 miles on it since Jan. I think that is probably what killed the pump was ...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

When I patched my frame I found out the holes in the 4.3 flexplate were the same size as the stock frame bushing holes. So I cut up the flexplate and used it to patch the rusted areas on my frame. Also would it be possible to bend up the oil pan or reshape it somehow a bit to get clearance for the s...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

I didn't drive much this summer. I am right around 35k on it. It has been chugging along good. I had one tank with really bad mileage and when I went to check why. I found the water drain valve on the fuel filter was not tight so it was dripping diesel. Other than that I haven't had to open the hood...

Started to repaint the van finally http://rthompson.us/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/IMAG0010_thumb.jpg http://rthompson.us/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/IMAG0011_thumb.jpg This thing has been an absolute pain trying to get those stickers off. I ended up just having to use paint stripper to remove everyth...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

The AWD part of the swap is the only thing I am really wondering about. I have no idea how the front end of an AWD fits in there but the oil pan on my 6.5 was barely able to clear the 2wd crossmember. I am using the stock driveshaft with a conversion joint to fit the larger 4l80 yoke. The trans is i...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

The minimum I have seen on any 4l60e computer is tps and rpm. Unlike the 700r4 it is totally computer controlled. There is one variant called the 4l60 without the e on it that is still basically a 700r4 and needs the tv cable hooked up. It is possible to modify the stock astro ecu to run the 4l60e t...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

a 4l60 would hold up to a non turbo that is not lugging around heavy loads about as well as it does with any other V8 swap I figure. But one of the things I kept running across when I was planning out my swap was it is much harder to get a 60e to run standalone cheaply without a lot of work. Where t...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

the 6.5 and the 4.3 both had very similar accessory drive setups. I never drained the a/c on mine and just used ratchet straps to hold it up against the hood while I pulled the motor out from under it. I don't know much about the 6.2 belt drive but it is probably similar to the 4.3 since chevy is pr...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

the part that is attached to the frame I just beat it to the rear with a sledgehammer till it was in line with the shift linkage then just reattached the shift rod back in place. I will get a pic of it tomorrow so you can see it. I guess the fancy way would be remove it and move it back to the corre...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

30k mile check in. Still chugging along like always. Only work since the last update was the battery isolator burned out and killed the alternator from overvolting it. So a rebuilt alternator and new isolator and it is all good again. The handy part was I was able to drive it for a few days till I h...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

The G30 14 bolt is offset the same amount. It is just a bit wider than the stock 10 bolt so the wheels will stick out some if I don't narrow it. I have had a hard time finding someone who has a jig that can narrow a 14 bolt and is willing to do it. I have the front and rear suspension sitting around...

Re: Who Is Going To Be First??.Diesel Conversion.

I still consider a 6.5 mechanical injection engine swap to be about as easy as a standard 350 swap :)

20k miles on mine so far and still chugging along just fine.

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

Didn't have much time to work on it today but I did get a set of standard U-bolt plates bolted on so the axle is now held on like any normal leaf spring setup. They look like they might hit when it bottoms out but I doubt it will do that often with the springs it has now. I will add another leaf to ...

Re: 1 Ton 94 Astro. 6.5L, 4l80e, 14 bolt swap project comple

Nobody cares much about pollution around here. I guess since everything is downstream nobody thinks much about what gets dumped into the water and air. Also no regulators work after 5pm or on weekends, so it is easy to get away with pretty much anything. I finally managed to find a good combination....
