Re: H.E.L.P !!! 4l60e all the same??

The 93 and 94 4l60e use a different number of pulses per mile to calibrate the shift points calculated by RPM's, it simply will not work in a 98. Some of the hard parts from the 98 will fit into the 94 case, if you wanted to build a stronger early model, but the early model parts are marginal at bes...

Re: Power take off transmission

The original "granny low" transmission is the SM420, which was used from the early 60's until it was replaced by the SM465. The gearing is about the same between the two, both are basically a functional 3 speed, with a bonus granny gear in both. The plus side to these, is that they are ava...

Re: Rear Brake Lines

If your fuel lines go, you will definitely know it. A pinhole leak with 45 PSI of constant fuel pressure is gonna spray a lot of fuel, which will be almost mist like in quality. If they look that bad, replace them ASAP, the hot exhaust parts can make for a real bad day very quickly. Seriously, take ...

Re: 1998 Chevy Astro stuck in drive... need help!

Maybe you could talk the current owner into sitting in the drivers seat with the van off, and listen for the sounds of shift linkage and detent clunks? If the van is cable shifted (mine are older, mechanical linkage) and there are no shifting clicks up and down the shift column, it could be a broken...

Re: Going to do the rear axle seal this week

Did you wipe all the extra oil that came back out when the differential was full? I would get a can of brake parts cleaner, and completely spray the entire differential until it is absolutely clean. Then, take it out for a drive. When you come home, jack it up and inspect for leaks. Remember that ge...

Re: What is the purpose for the proprtioning valve depressor?

The proportioning valve works by equally proportions of line pressure to the front/rear braking circuits, so that the brakes work properly. It allows for just a small bit of bias toward the rear brakes, so that they lock up before the front brakes, allowing for a bit of steerability before an accide...

Re: modified oil pan: pump and sump ?'s

The vortech V6 pan is the same as all 1 piece rear main pans, so any pan from 87 up will work. The stock 4.3 oil pump is a direct bolt on for the 5.7, and will supply plenty of oil to the engine, but if you are concerned, there are 2 designs for the 5.7 pump, and 2 designs for the 4.3 pickup. The t...

Re: 5.7 swap: help please

The trick with the exhxaust manifolds is to find a pair that dump in the same location as your 4.3, so you can use the stock crossover pipe. Chevy truck manifolds SHOULD work, but no promises. If your donor engine came from a 4x4, chances are that they were built to clear the same obstacles as your ...

Re: modified oil pan: pump and sump ?'s

The 4.3 engine is 4 inches shorter than the 5.7 engine, so a direct swap is impossible. The JTR kit is new strengthened pan rails, and a weld in section to clear the front 4wd housing. The 9 inch depth, is so that the proper oil capacity is kept. An aftermarket oil pan will still have interference w...

Re: 5.7 swap: help please

The Taurus fan is a single, and it has the shroud built right in. I would definitely steer clear of aftermarket electric fans, as air only gets forced through the fan footprint, and about 60% of the radiator is ineffective unless you are driving at highway speeds. The Autozone heatbuster is a 3 core...

Re: Auto Trans Overdrive Issue?

The vibration noise is probably the viscous coupling in the transfer case. I would check for a bad shift solenoid, or broken wires inside the transmission. Replacement solenoids are not that expensive, but I can't tell you the procedure for testing them on an '03.
