Re: Solid Axle Swap into a 1998 Astro AWD

Then there's that guy who installed coils under his Astro 4x4. Eerily enough, I'm building my own HumVee in the garage, and the Astro subframe with those coils and buckets on it is coming up for sale in September or October. The new owner need only provide a 1975- 1979 Ford F-150 Front D44. It's all...

Re: Solid Axle Swap into a 1998 Astro AWD

1999 Ford E-350 Super Duty rear on Ford Powerstroke front springs. I couldn't have calculated the ride any better.

Re: Solid Axle Swap into a 1998 Astro AWD

Do the front axle with coils, and you'll be able to sit it "ahead" by 2 to 3" to clear the front "cab" corners of the fenders. You may still need to trim some. Coils ain't half the work that leafs are. Seriously. You need a panhard/trackbar mount welded on, and you'll need t...

Re: Different big tire idea.

Look, Ive wheeled with a couple of Libbys. They broke. They were not ready to play.To add insult to injury, the front axle had a factory flaw in that they ran a oil passage to allow the gear splash to lubricate the bearing in the high pinion...but it ran along the spine of the diff....in an ALUMINUM...

Re: Different big tire idea.

You can outperform the Liberty in a stock AWD. Jeez. You'll probably be able to do that without even exploding the front differential, like the Liberty will.
Liberty...the ruin of Jeep as we knew it.
Now, the new 4 doors are pretty cool. Kinda Cherokee with a removable roof cool.

Re: AWD Subframe comparison to 2WD Subframe

Go with fabricating on the AWD subframe.
It's just easier. When you want to install the completed AWD subframe into the 2WD van, you will need two parts. A passengerside exhaust manifold from the AWD, and an AWD steering box. These items do not interchange.

Re: Blazer frame swop? (anyone done it)

The reason I went with the Astro Subframe and a custom rear subframe was engine placement in the truck vs. the engine placement in the van.... And to eliminate cutting out the rear floor or having that huge gap you see in the previously pictured Astro atop a Blazer frame. Want a diesel? Swap in a 3....

Re: Full Frame for SAS

I have driven my Van for two years on the very system you propose. The three link (two radius arms and a trac bar) is one of the easiest systems to adapt to any vehicle. I've put it under 6 vehicles before the van was done...from a CJ-8 Jeep , a couple of XJ Cherokees, right on up to a Comanche pick...

Jeep made two flavors in the New Process/New Venture series.
Command-Trac (part-time never to be used on dry pavement) and Select-Trac (viscous couplings that allowed bind relief).
The older non-electric models were 242 units. Dean listed the later models above.

Naw... I love the simplicity of the steel dually bud wheel. I got the 72.5" wms to wms version and added 2" adapters to move the rear "inside" bud wheel out to where my singles live now. Little white paint on 'em, and chrome ring, and I'm done. Bought 33" NITTO Terragrappers...

I think what we're missing here is the reaction of those Hummer drivers to this one. One local guy is way cool about it, but the majority of the yuppies who bought theirs to be "snippy" and hip end up flipping me off. It hauls 170 cubic feet. Hummer has 86 It gets 22 mpg on the highway. Hu...

Dean, stock radius arms are a little short to take you all the way to the crossmember. We added one inch steel plate and some creative geometry to get mine back there. I had to drop the crossmember two inches as well. What I'd recommend is looking at some of the kits made to retrofit a Dana 60 front...

Those are real H3 mirrors on the van these days.
I'm anxious to see the front end on there with them.
