Re: 91 Astro, 2WD with TBI, still starting hard! Help!

All of the work I did so far didn't entirely solve the problem: The Astro starts now in 5-10 seconds instead of 30...So my guess is the fuel pressure regulator...it doesn't seem to be holding fuel pressure when you shut it down, and acts like you are repriming the lines when starting it up. Guess I'...

Re: Tire choice at stock height...

Riley's Owner, The front studs are actually a breeze to replace, at least on a 91...you just jack it up and put it on jack stands, take a hammer and whack the old stud until it falls inside the brake rotor...you can fish it out with your fingers, and then push in the new one from the back side. Get ...

Re: Can the catalytic converter be eliminated?

Hey Wagonmaster! Already replaced the fuel pump, filter, and the pickup sock in the tank...also replaced the oil pressure switch, which seemed to help, but didn't entirely solve the problem: The Astro starts now in 5-10 seconds instead of 30...my guess is the fuel pressure regulator...it doesn't see...

Re: tire thoughts...

More important to me lately in choosing to buy ANY product is country of origin. There are only TWO major tire manufacturers out there that make ALL of their tires in the USA...Goodyear, and Cooper...that's it. Michelin, Firestone, Bridgestone, Mickey Thompson, BF Goodrich, Kelly, etc...they farm ou...

Re: Tire choice at stock height...

We put on the new tires today! Huzzah!!! 235-70-R15s. Cooper Discovery dual purpose truck tires...451.00 out the door. I was going to put on Goodyear Tracker 2 tires in the same size at Walmart, but Walmart wouldn't put that size on my Astro since they are bigger than stock...so I waited in line for...

Re: 91 Astro, 2WD with TBI, still starting hard! Help!

I changed the oil today to Castrol 10-W40, put in Slick 50, changed the filter (Fram), and changed the oil pressure sending unit...and voila! It ALMOST starts right up!...lol If I turn the key to ON without trying to start it until the seatbelt light goes off (the pump runs in the background) and th...

Re: 91 Astro, 2WD with TBI, still starting hard! Help!

The light does come on when you are trying to start it, and you try too long before it starts...lol. It goes right out once the engine starts. It did come on on me the other day though, on its maiden voyage without a cat...it came on after about 10 minutes, and stayed on till I drove it home, about ...

Re: engine stumbles & dies in gear

I replaced the fuel filter, the fuel pump, the fuel pick-up sock/filter thingy, and even flushed the tank out with fresh gas before reinstalling it...and yep, its a brand new fuel filter. I think I'll replace the water temp sending unit this week, and give her an oil change while I'm at it...the oil...

Re: engine stumbles & dies in gear

Thanks Skippy. I'm thinking it might be the temp sender...I know where the water temp sender is for the guage...where is the one for the computer? If that doesn't clear it up, I'll put the throttle body and clean and rebuild it, and replace the fuel pressure regulator...but that doesn't seem to be i...

Re: 91 Astro, 2WD with TBI, still starting hard! Help!

Well, it wasn't that wire hanging by the starter that was the problem...I'm not even sure what that wire is supposed to go to, but it seems to be a ground maybe? With my Fluke attached to it and a good ground, there is intermittent continuity to ground, key on or off. It is an orange skinny wire for...

Re: 91 Astro, 2WD with TBI, still starting hard! Help!

I found something that may be the problem, although I am still leaning towards the ICM. Near the starter, there is a skinny wire that looks like it is supposed to connect to the starter terminals, but is broken off. The starter turns the motor even without this wire connected, but could it be some s...

Re: 91 Astro, 2WD with TBI, still starting hard! Help!

Hmmmm...sounds like it could be the ignition control module... But, my fuel pump runs constantly...it doesn't shut itself off at all. From the moment you turn the key, the fuel pump is running. Quietly, but it stays running the whole time the engine is running, of for that matter, the whole time the...

91 Astro, 2WD with TBI, still starting hard! Help!

Hey guys and gals! Maybe you can help me with this one, cuz it has me stumped! Our van is a 91, 2WD, with the stock V-6 (217K miles on engine, 4K on rebuilt transmission), and TBI. When we first got the van, it was running very rough, but it had 6 year old gas in the tank and a blocked cat. It would...

Re: engine stumbles & dies in gear

What a great thread! I've been reading all the threads here, trying to isolate the problem with our hard start on our 91, and this one was very informative. Still got some questions though! When we first got the van, it was running very rough, but it had 6 year old gas in the tank and a blocked cat....

Re: New fuel pump - replacement data

Don't feel bad! I had to drop my tank twice when I replaced the fuel pump! My dummass didn't know the fuel pump disconnect harness was in the tank assembly, so I pried it apart on the outside of the tank. So when I reassembled, I had the harness backwards...the fuel guage still worked, amazingly eno...
