Re: S10 front axle swap
It's my understanding that the S10 front diff with the disconnect only separates one (passenger's side?) CV axle. The front driveshaft and the other axle would still be connected. Details here: http://northeastoverland.forumotion.com/t22-strengthened-s10-ifs All of that said, anecdotal evidence fro...

136 manual 4x4 conversion
There seems to be a consensus that the 136 cannot be converted to manual engage in and out transfer case. As I see it this shouldn't be a huge problem as the motor simply actuates an internal cam that operates an arm that applies pressure to a thrust bearing that engages the clutch pack. There shoul...

Re: S10 front axle swap (bad idea)
On further thought, releasing the front axle is a bad idea with this transfer case. This will result in clutches always wanting to slip past each other as the font end will not be turning and the rear will. Even with no pressure on the clutch pack, there will be significant drag from this. The ONLY ...

Re: 4.3 economy
My '97 AWD half passenger / half cargo - only one rear bench seat (special order company vehicle) with 3.42 gears did get slightly better fuel mileage than my fully optioned '04 AWD. So the lighter weight, gearing and passenger tires do make a difference but not enough in this instance for me to no...

S10 front axle swap
Anybody swap out their front differential for one from an S10 with the axle that disengages? I have a 2000 AWD, and am looking at all the little things I can do to up my mileage. The actual time I need active AWD is minimal, so it makes sense to simply install a shut off switch and put in clean new ...

Re: 4.3 economy
My '96 AWD hi-top conversion (w/3.42 gears) used to pull down 20 mpg easily. It seems though, the newer the van, the harder time they have achieving this number. Not sure why that would be though. I think 20 is certainly attainable, and using synthetics is a step in the right direction. As mentione...

TCC Lockup switch
I plan on installing a TCC lockup switch on my 2000 Safari AWD Utility, as well as a transfer case lockout switch. I've done the TCC lockup switch before on my 1997 C1500, and it has been extremely successful. I use it towing trailers, and just driving up the highway because the 4L60E uses the torqu...

Re: Wipers not working
Everybody's making this far too complicated................... These wipers have brush problems. Pull the plastic cover off the front of the wiper motor box...... the one with 3 torx screws. Take your finger and wipe the grease around on the disk where the brushes run. Also wipe some grease on the c...

4.3 economy
I just purchased a 2000 Safari 4.3 AWD Utility with a "knock in the engine" and 136k miles. I heard the knock and couldn't get my wallet out fast enough......... clearly a broken flywheel. I own a '97 2wd Chevy C 1500 with the same engine, and routinely make from 20-22 mpg highway with it....
