Post by captaincon »

After some advice my 92 safari is doing my nut .
It's slow to pick up and when I floor it it just dies so far it's had
Plugs ( old plugs was a nice colour)
Leads
Fuel filter
Coil
Complete distributor
Egr valve blanked
Cat removed
New exhaust
I have only had it about a month and it broke down on the way home .it had a fuel pump at 90000 Miles it's only on 93000 now .
Thanks for any help

Have you checked the fuel pressure? New pumps in these vans fail too. If you pull the air cleaner you can watch the fuel spray.

Is the timing right?

Do you have the factory service manual? It helps for troubleshooting.

is it a throttle body or a vortec engine? (VIN Z or W)
so, what happens when "it just dies"? is it hard to restart? can you smell fuel ? What ??

Thanks for the replys its a tbi .z code
No smell of fuel
It always starts easy
If I am easy on the throttle I can get it up to 70 but it has no power .
Its not cutting out or stalling.
It ticks over fine and will rev fine when it's not moving.

I agree woodbutcher.
Check both the inline fuel filter and the fuel pressure.
make sure the pump is providing enough pressure and be sure nothing is restricting the flow.
There is also a filter inside the tank that can plug up if the tank is real cruddy inside.

Also. is the engine light coming on? have you read the codes?

again, like WB said. the timing could also do it. if you have an egr blokoff then quite probably, your timing needs to be adjusted just slightly.
Do you know how to do that? you need to unplug the gizmo that sorta looks like a fuse from the distributor, and then shine the light. Zero is factory , and you probly need to advance it a few degrees is all. not too many. then it will have Oomph ! Maybe ;)

Pressure for the TBI is low, 9 - 11 pound I think is the factory set for the fuel pressure regulator.
Don't forget to look close at the distributor for play and the rotor and cap for wear. You said they were new but they don't last. My experience with both my vans has taught me to keep a cap and rotor for spares. I have new spares in both my '97 and in the '93. The heat in the doghouse of these vans just kills them. I put a new distributor in the 350 when I finished the swap in January, end of August the rotor was toast. I didn't use AC Delco but the Autozone premium, lifetime warranty. I put on my spare cap brought the old back and now have the new spare again. I'm sure the V8 being stuffed in w/ headers raised the temps under hood so I'm playing with a couple 120 mm fans, maybe they'll move the air a bit more but my plan is to get another hood, staking on the one I have to build a cowl induction type hood.

The '93 don't have a spare tire but I keep a spare cap,,, :-s

I'm in the same boat with my 93' but I bought an ALDL cable to connect my laptop. Tuner Pro and Datamaster software is free but you can't do anything as to changes to the computer but you can get real time data.
