Adding Seats To A Cargo Van

Post by VanDamn »

Hey y'all.

Searched around a bit but didn't get many answers. My step son is looking to add passenger seats to the back of his cargo astro van. Other than seats, seat belts, and attaching them to the floor does the title need to be changed? Does it need some crazy expensive architect to sign off?

Thanks in advanced for the advice.

I'm getting the full set of seats, floor brackets, and seat belts out of an 03 Montana van. I'll also be reinforcing floor with steel and what not. It seems I've also left out an important bit of information I'm in Ontario Canada.

Since it's a home job, the liability is entirely on you.

I don't think anybody is going to come inspect them, but if you mention it to the auto insurance agency they'll have something to say about it.

Personally, I would just find some Astro seats.

Hi,

The 2003 Pontiac Montana seats and brackets should work fine.
Use grade 8 hardened bolts and hex nuts and washers to anchor brackets, etc.

I put some 2003 Olds Silloutte mini van seats in my 2003 Astro. The GM FWD mini vans included Chevy Venture, Pontiac Montana, Olds Silloutte, and Saturn.

They did have nice seats.

The other nice seats I have used are bench seats from Dodge Caravan mini vans.

Use good steel brackets, use heavy fender washers or flat plates under floor to strengthen floor.

Get the full seat of seat belts too. Anchor seat belts to seat fran]me or floor brackets.

Heavy Uni strut steel brackets come in several angles, plates, wing fittings, etc. The Uni strut brackets are 1/4” galvanized steel. Nice to use since they do not have sharp edges. You may also find that Uni strut or Super strut channel is also useful to make adapter bars to allow bench seats to be mounted to floor brackets. The channel comes in 7/8”x 1 5/8” or 1 5/8” x 1 5/8”. In 10 foot lengths from Lowe’s or HD, also useful are 3/8”. Channel nuts that fit in the channel.
