What to look for P0301

Post by Astro4x4 »

Hello people,
Well got everything buttoned up, fired it and got a code P0301 - misfire cylinder #1 The engine idles pretty darn rough, but off idle it runs fine and seems to be every bit as peepy as it was before the overheat. Could we definitively say I have a problem with cylinder #1? I know I have to do a compression check (oh fun) and check for spark, check plug wires etc, check for EGR operation, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas? Would the overheat condition cause problems with the injector poppets? Is there a way to fire the injectors to check for fuel? This cropped up after I overheated the poor thing a few weeks back, up to that point she purred like a kitten.
I just need it to get me into the warmer months, when I get the bike out, then I'll perform the swap.

Plugs are new OEM spec ACs and wires, cap and rotor are only about a year old.

How bad did you overheat it? was your temp needle bending before you shut the motor off? = serverly overheated

A compression check of all cylinders should be your first diagnostic check.

Take all the plugs out and make sure that your battery is fully charged, remove the fuelpump relay or fuse (so that you are not dumping gas into the cylinders while cranking)

You do a compression check with the throttle wide open.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a compression test is performed hot, right? That scares me knowing what I know about getting at the spark plugs on these vans. ](*,)

Compression check can be done when the engine is cold. Check the wires with an ohm meter. The overheat may have affected them.
