intermittant SES light - noticed something today

Post by justice »

I have been having an intermittant SES light for a while now, it just randomly comes on and then goes off, no rhyme or reason for it. pulled codes last year and they referenced the O2 sensor and the EGR. I replaced the O2 sensor but never got around to doing the EGR, and I still have the intermittant SES light.

Van is running fine, milage seems ok, and it passed inspection (with emmisions) without any problem.

now the intersting part. there is a tube that runs from the pcv valve to the front of the throttle body. sometimes the rubber fitting on the tube that connects it to the throttlebody falls off (i have been lucky enough to find it every time :) )

I can always tell when this happens because the engine idles much higher when it falls off. It happened the other day as well. I have not had a chance to repair it but I noticed today that I did not get the SES light at all. Normally i will see it go on and off several times when i drive somewhere. but today, nothing. the only difference is that the tube is not connected.

why would this "fix" the SES issue?

also, what can i use thats heat resistant to glue the fitting back on the tube so it does not fall off anymore?

a replacement from the dealer is $19
I have a ban hammer and I ain't fraid to use it!

Is this the 92?

When did you last change the pcv valve? have you disconnected the batt to clear the codes?

I'm not sure if this would be any help http://proseal.supergluecorp.com/80724.html

is it only coming apart due to vibration? perhaps some of the aluminumized tape may hold it together :-k

yes, its the 92

when i bought the van 3-4 years ago, this line was missing, so i replaced the pcv valve when i bought the hose.

No i have not disconneted the battery.

If the hose is the one I am thinking of, it is a rubber hose that slips over a steel tube. You can try a very small hose clamp. Another thing you can try is get a piece of small gauge solid cooper wire like 22 gauge. Wrap it around twice then twist the ends together using a pair of long nose pliers. If you have a piece of phone wire laying around that is solid you can strip off the insulation and use it. Over the years I have done this a number of times when I couldn't get a clamp small enough or the screw on the clamp would interfere with something.

Mine was always falling off on my 93 aswell. Knew every time cuz she would suddenly rev right up and try to jump forward. Fixed it with a zip tie used like a hose clamp. Don't leave it unconnected too long it's essentially a giant hole straight into the TB with no filter which is why the engine revs up at the same time sucking anything debris wise around it straight into the engine.

Dunno why the SES light would stay off tho. Possibly the EGR just needs a cleaning.

I almost wonder if your EGR problem is vacuum related because without that hose on, the gaping hole that is created in the TB would cause a loss of vacuum. Atleast I think it would.

Yep it'd do that. Vacuum to the EGR solenoid is lost and it sets a code.
