Need more umph power :)
Need more umph power :)
Hi guys - me again.
I need more power but not axle, tranny, AWD breaking power.
I have been doing a lot of staring into my engine bay and surfing websites especially the s10 forums.
Honestly I have been looking down the supercharging route. But everything I found out there I am not sure about applying to my Safari as well is quite expensive. I have been looking for parts separately to do the work but the hardest part is finding a physically small supercharger.
Anyone out there with some more information or suggestions or is this just a bad idea all together?
Yes I have ditched going 4.11s for now as want more noticeable power and the strength in the axles to stay.

There really isn't any inexpensive route to power, outside of gears.
Supercharger is probably the quickest, easiest least expensive (in realative terms).
V-8 if you have the time & an extra van to do it with.

Have you done the EGR and throttle blade mods already?

I am aware of this. But after making a pondering post about gears I have been advised not to do it. Well more like I dont like to pay for work done on my rides and going 4.11s on the AWD is quick pricy as well I am already at 3.73. Who knows I might bite the bill later on.

Agreed which is why I am looking down this route

No can do on this one. I dont have the time / knowledge to do it. The supercharger on the other hand I can do with minimal down time.

Throttle I have a CNC 75mm lighterweight ;p
EGR mods ... ? that one slipped me ... ok research time - but I still want more umph. ideally I want to be sitting with some more torque.

Re: Need more umph power :)
So what have you done already? Have you upgraded exhaust, catback, high flow cats, cold air intake (not the cheap ones), throttle body, computer, etc? I've seen someone on here that had a supercharger on there v6 astro a few months ago as well as someone that had a single turbo setup. I too would love to have the power of either, but to me the engine bay looks extremely cramped if your going to keep all the creature comforts...

Sup BB!!!
Yes I have done everything you mentioned LONG ago minus the computer (I wanted to long time ago and talking to Sanja I really wanted too but I held off because in the back of my mind I knew I had more mods to come). The cold air I did the volant ($$$) but noticed no difference even when hauling WOT compared to just stock box + K/N. Maybe cause it is quite warm here in BC Canada but it wasnt worth my money and the retailer was willing to give me full refund

I even have the IAT modded for low read outs (temp lower I think) which I did feel a difference.
Nope I dont have headers done yet

Who was it with the supercharger? I have not been on the forum as much as I would like to be - life gets busy some times :(

Supercharged Stro, it was on the other site but I tracked it down:

The Turbo one was just a van for sale on the other board as well, I tried to contact him to get more info about it, anyway, here's that link:

Thanks for linky dude!!!
I dont want to turbo ... as well I go off-roading and dont know how to stuff a turbo under our right hoods hence why I am looking for a small-form factor supercharger. As well I do not want to do with pipes again. If I am doing anything else to my exhaust it is headers.

Re: Need more umph power :)
i think i posted a while ago about the remote turbo set ups like sts, if anyone had researched it......from what i can guage, wouldn't be too hard to copy and would be hell of a lot easier to set up than a supercharger......i'm thinking even with the off roading to deal with....the piping would be safe...maybe some sort of bars or cage to protect the turbo would suffice....

Yes I remember that as I remember saying to myself "oh man! what a teaser!!!"

I dont think they can be submerged in water right? That is why I am staying away ... as well I like my current exhaust haha.
I really wish I wrote down the one post someone said a specific type / year of the 4x4 blazer/jimmy headers would fit my 97 AWD :(

How 'bout electric fans (I can't believe I just recommended that)? If you're willing to invest a few bucks, get the Flex-A-Lite twin set-up. Good for 4600 cfm. Comes with it's own shroud and fits quite well. Keeps ZZ cool.
I hate headers, but they would definitely help a bit. Especially if your programmer allows you to re-curve the fuel mapping a bit afterwards.
Cold air intake. A real cold-air intake. Meaning a freed-up air filter plumbed to tons of fresh, un-heated air.
I'd bet that between the 3 mods above, you'd be good fer at least 20-30 horseys. Simpler than a Supercharger and cheaper too. Only 1/3 to 1/2 the hp gains, mind you

Re: Need more umph power :)
PETEY!!! MY BLUE Canadian friend! Doing any drinking this Friday night? Care to join me on the westcoast and put a 572 in Princess for me?
Yes I have done all that but a custom air intake. Again I tried the Volant Cold Air and did not see a difference but my wallet sure did. So I sent it back.
If this supercharging thingy dont work for me I will spend bucks on custom headers (if I cannot find aftermarkets to fit) and then finally get a programmed PCM/ECU done. That should free up some power.
Hmm I thought a few of you went electric fans and converted back - Dean what through some and I am reading this write up right now.
Man these heavy-duty calipers are nice Petey! They GRAB like a monkey on bananas!!!

Re: Need more umph power :)
The supercharger WILL definitely up your horseys. It's just that it's alot of moollah to be puttin' down on something which'll have the corner car techs scratchin' their nuts trying to understand the next time you pull in for repairs.
I don't necessarily like electric fans. They're versatile, yes. With my Fle-A-Lite, I can add swithec to kill/activate the fans, I can adjust the cut-in setpoints with a twist of a screwdriver etc. But the fact is, nuthin' sucks like a big ole engine-driven fan. In your case however, I'm sure you'd be happier than Lynne at a male-bashing seminar if you got the Fle-A-Lite set-up I'm running. Keeps all 502 (actually 508 since the rebuild) cubic inches of ZZ cool even while towing the Tramper.
As far as the "Monkey on bananas" thing, I'll take your word for it. I've never had a monkey. I'm friends with Lockdoc though, if that makes any difference.....

I dont let shops wrench on my rides - as stated before I only got a shop to do the exhaust installation (I still brought in the parts) because I dont have a welder and also cause I knew there be problems. I visited them MANY times to fix the leaks. As well alignment thingy was a nightmare but the shop pulled through.
Flex-a-Lite eFans eh? Do you happen so to have a write up?
