Darwin Awards

Post by chesehd »

I was just boosting my ego by enjoying the misfortunes of others when I came across this tidbit:

I don't know if this one ever made it to the old board but it needs to be here!

I did something almost that stupid once BUT, got away with it. I was flow testing a BSA motorcycle head on my SuperFlow 110 flow bench. I always test with the carb in place because that is reality and not just selling numbers like just testing the head itself. Well, this time I forgot to take the float bowl off from the carb before running the test. I always thought the carb turned the air / fuel mix into a mist and the port delievered it to the combustion chamber. I was fascinated to learn the fuel comes up from the float bowl into the port not in a mist but large globs that break up and spread out as they are going down the port and don't become a mist till almost disappearing by the inlet valve. What seemed like a couple seconds later I realized I was running about a 15-1 air/fuel mix past the two sparking vacuume cleaner motors that power the flow bench. I about wet myself and shut that puppy off and ran out of the shop like a little girl. Awhile later I came back in and put the argon (enert gas) line from my Tig welder into the inlet port and let it flow for awhile, then ducked down and reached up to turn the bench back on and clear all the air/fuel fumes out of there. I'm not sure all that was necessary but at least I'm here to admit it. Not so smart Stan !!!
