Something to think about, because you may wanna try it.

Before I Gullwinged my sliding door, I welded in a piece of thin steel to make that ugly 1/2 inch slot smaller.

I am really enjoying seeing your great technical pictures, you are inspiring other members here to pick up a mig welder and modify their van to how they want it to look. Great Job!

Great looking work Danny. As Darren said, it's good to see a member jumping in there and doing such a good job.

I also stole Darren's gas filler idea but instead of the gullwing slider I filled mine. Here's a shot of the track after doing exactly the same as Darren, tacking in a piece of sheetmetal but filling, and the other shot is the top of slider after tacking in a piece of 1/4" rod stock which fills the gap perfectly around door.

Image
Magnets in lower right were used to hold 1/4 rod stock in place while tacking. Cooled with damp cloth after every weld.

Hi Danny.
Fantastic work. Wish I was there to help out!!
Once my front end is finished up, I'm going to attempt a similar thing for the back.

Can you take a pic of how you have mounted the front of the 4 link bars?

What are you going to use for air supply and management? I plan to use a nitogen cylinder and tank/compressor back up with 3/8" line and auto pilot air management. Any thoughts?

I always take comfort in how much money I am saving doing it all myself \:D/ Can't imagine how much it would cost to have a pro shop do it, and still not get it exactly how you want it. :yikes:

Look forward to coming somewhere near your standards

Andy.

You can do it. Start hitting garage sales & fleamarkets for a 110V wire welder. Do some reading on body and sheetmetal work then head to the JY for some scrap sheetmetal and practice. The body work using filler takes some time to get what you want where and before it starts curing and not applying to much. The latter being my biggest mistake usually and wind up cheese grating off a handfull before the sanding process.
Anyway, if you really want to get in there,,go for it but be prepared for a good cry first time out.
