Hypermiling and the Tranny

Post by chemist »

Just a question for those who understand automatic transmissions. One hypermiling technique I've heard of is to get up to speed, drop to neutral and coast to lower speed. Then go back into gear and get back up to desired speed...
I have no idea as to whether this is effective at all, but it begs one question before even attempting. Will this harm an automatic transmission?

Previous Vans: 1998 Astro, AWD, 138K mi; traded on 2003 Chevy Astro, AWD, 125K mi; traded on
2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 WT, 4x4, ext, long box
2007 Chevy Cobalt
1998 Maza MPV (180K mi and in need of PA inspection--only paid $500!)

Needed: a Gen 2 Astro project vehicle...

Nope-as long as the engine is running.

Ah, the pulse and glide technique. While I use a lot of hypermiling techniques, this is one I don't do. Too much work. I do quite often use neutral to slow down in traffic then put the van back in gear. No problems with either transmission so far.
