H.E.L.P !!! 4l60e all the same??

Post by crazyastro »

I got the chance to get a 98 really cheap.
It got a broken tranny. As far as i know it should be a 4L60e.
I got a 4L60e from a 2wd 94 S10 laying at home.
Will that fit, cause I saw a electrical box on the driver side of the astro.
WIll that just swap over, because u got no shifting linkon the newer years??
Never saw that before.

I have to decide till 2morrow around lunch time, otherwise the astro gets crushed at the junkyard.

Please let me know if my 4l60e should fit??
In my opinion there is nothing else out there than a 4L60e, right?

THANX!!

If the S-10 has a 4.3 in it it should work. Some swapping of parts may be necessary. \:D/

The tranny will not work correctly! It will not lock up the torque converter. BUT...it will get you running and the shifter can be switched over I think. Hopefully Lockdoc will pipe up.

It will not work. Not only is the actual case different between a 98 and 94, the internal electrical parts are different in a few areas as well as the shifter as you noticed already. The 98 has the neautral safety and other switches for the gauges attached to the shifter cable.

Actually I don't think it will...... Starting in 95 the torque converter lock up became PWM and also the 98+ use a cable instead of the regular linkages to shift. But depending on the problem rebuilding the 98s tranny using parts from the 94 is entirely possible tho.

EDIT: Man you two are quick on the draw in the time it took me to write the message proof read it and then post, you posted up.... GEEEEEEEZZZZZ

You can take the pan off and swap out the shift linkage between the two trans but the 94 trans has nowhere to mount the switch assembly. I did the opposite and put a 97 into a 93 and it worked, but not correctly and I did not have to mount the switch assembly like you would have to.

If you had no choice but to use a 94 trans I guess you could make it fit and run but it is not really worth it unless you are making a real beater.

Thanx guys!! =D>

sh*t!! That really sucks!
I would have got that 98 for $ 800. Checked it yesterday: motor runs good, no dents at all, everything else is in a really good shape. Dunno about brakes and the rear axle, cause it sits in its spot at the junkyard.
Came from Fayetteville, NC, so never so too many salt.
Trannys and tranny rebuilds are stupid expensive over here...

I dunno if u guys already know, i sold my 89 and got me a 1500 instead. (had too many issues lately..)
So i really wanted to have a astro again + i wanted to have a comfy daily.
So, i thought i could get that 98 really cheap, pay the import fee, take it to inspection and care about anything else later.
BUt i don't really wanna deal with extra costs for a tranny rebuild or a new tranny.

So i guess i have to get me a BMW for the autobahn rides and the winter... #-o

Thank you guys!!

The 93 and 94 4l60e use a different number of pulses per mile to calibrate the shift points calculated by RPM's, it simply will not work in a 98. Some of the hard parts from the 98 will fit into the 94 case, if you wanted to build a stronger early model, but the early model parts are marginal at best, and should be upgraded when being rebuilt.

The shift points are not a problem since the shift solenoids are on\off solenoids. The ECM does the calculations with the pulses from the speed sensor. Not the tranny. The tranny just waits for a signal from the ECM. The PWM solenoid(s) for the TCC are the problem. They are setup differently. No way to lock up the converter.
