The One fromt he video IIRC is a first gen astro. Blue I believe.

Gunnar, nice little write up, great stuff!
I'm guessing that your van probably holds some sort of record, ie The furthest any A/S has been off road away from civilisation. Makes my green lane excursions look positively tame.
How far and long are these expeditions of yours?
Reckon we'd love to see more pics if you have them.

Hi guys

I see that my friend Erling (brutalis) has posted some more photo, taken on trip, not on a glaicer and as you can see it is sometimes difficult to get where you are going.

"astroshepawd", you were asking about how long those trips are, usually it is a weekend trips and we newer go alone, number of cars in trip is 6-8 and that is a good number, if they are more than that it takes longer time to travel and in those trips we use that extra tank. Longer trips are popular at easter (4-5 days) and then we take extra, extra gasoline with us.
There is no one in those huts in winter and they are closed so we get a key at the Traveling club that owns the huts before we leave town, you can see one of them at the pic where silver "icefari" is "drinking".
When we get stuck, we usually use a tensible rope to get loose but when its a hevy stuck we took out the winch, and just plug it on any jeep instead of having a winch on each car.

The highland is a public land and in summertime you have to stay on mountain roads and track but when snow has come, you can go everywere in the highlands, no or little of trees, houses or fencing.

I was telling you about the gas prize here, but we have to pay about 50-100% higer prize for parts and cars (new corvette here, 80.000$) from USA than you guys are paying, so we have to think carefully about what to buy for the cars.

P.S. I was expecting more response from you guys, maybe you are still digesting those informations.

Unfortunately there are very few places in the states that are open to that kind of driving

and of all the astro/safari members maybe a quarter of the vans are lifted in any way.
Let alone really setup up for off-roading......BUT the list may be growing.

I cannot speak for the rest as I am in the UK, but I have heaps of questions I want to ask you Icelandastro, maybe I'll 'pm' you some, else this thread will go way off topic!!! (just like our UK site, see below)

I understand how difficult it is for you guys to obtain stuff and the price of your fuel and parts is another story. Full credit to you for making it all work.

Check out this slide show and the six-wheel-drive, 7.3 liter V8 Ford van, the "Ice Challenger."

Must give me detailed pictures of that sliding door. I will eventually have a slider door opperate like that, need to know what to do/dont do for it. Would like to have some input.

Yeah, that would be good to see. And more pics in general of your van, Gunnar, as well as the IceSafari. (and its front bumper)
