Mysterious plug

Post by afsigma21 »

I was not sure where to put this, it is more an electrical question, but my gut tells me it is related to the A/C.

See the pictures, this plug is not plugged in, no idea where it goes. it is on the far left side of the engine bay (when standing in front of the car, facing it).

The alternator got swapped and before I had that done, the AC worked, not it does not kick on at all. Anyone know where this goes?

If you look at the picture, you can see 2 wires split out of a larger bundle, and this is one of those 2.

HELP!

Hmmm, well I knew the day would come when we would reach the limit of attatchments, good to know thanks for the info.

As for the plug, your right it does have something to do with your A.C look along the pipes leading from the silver canister you will see where it plugs in, if i can find a pic I will post.

So I was a little wrong about pipes, lol anyways this should help you to see where the plug goes. Can you see on the silver cannister, well at about the 11 o'clock position you can see where the plug should attach ( i believe the one you are talking about ) in my case it has been removed from that connection and is just hanging un-plugged to the left of that connection...

I think that is a different plug than I am looking at.

Yours is like a green top with gray plug, almost identical shape.

the one I am missing is a blue top with black plug.

Working on getting them up on photo bucket.

That almost looks like the plug that could go to the rear heat solenoid valve - when that valve goes south all you have to do is unplug it and the water flows to the rear heater coil (mine did and then I moved the wire to above the A/C condenser/evaporator).

I'll take a look tonight on my 2001 and see if I can see anything else it might be....

I found White Hockey tape and a felt pen is great for marking wires I disconnect.... so I know what they do in the future.... :canuk:

that might be related to my overheating issue, interesting.

I will check my Haynes manual and see if that is listed anywhere

Those are the exact colour wires that I have that are supposed to go to the rear heat solenoid. So that is my guess at what it is. I have some photos on flickr that show the location of that solenoid on my van. I'll post them up again as links below.

Overview Photo A/C dryer
Solenoid Close Up
Solenoid and Diaphragm

I'd put a meter on that connection and find out if when you turn on the rear heat switch it you have power at that connector, and then none when the rear heat switch is off. If so... you found what it does.... hope this helps

My selenoid does not have a plug that looks like yours, it seems different.

When looking at your first pic.. "Overview photo A/C dryer"

You have a wire bundle that goes straight out the top of the frame, where does that go to? That is the same wire that has this plug on the end.

Or is it for the rear heat selenoid but you have it unplugged and out of the way?

Yes that is the plug to my rear heat solenoid just tucked up and out of the way the one that runs to the left in the photo. The one out the top simply goes to ground

Well, my selenoid has no place for a plug. It has a vacuum line on the top and that is it.

Anyone with a 97 got a pic?

If you dont have rear heat you will still have that connector, it will just be hanging there. Do you have the seperate heater for the back? Not the vents under the seats, but the one to the left of the middle bench.

I'm guessing you dont, as the valve under the hood would have an electrical solenoid. If of course that is the connector your talking about..

It is a conversion van. I know I have rear AIR, I just assumed that is rear heat.

I will have to take a closer look.

rear air and rear heat is not the same.
I have a '98 with rear a/c but did not also purchase the rear heat option. I didn't look, but my plug is probably just hanging there unattached as well.
