Re: Factory fuel pump or generic external pump replacement???
Well, in short probably not. You would have to delete the intank fuel pump and modify the pickup to accommedate the inline pump. Not all f/i vehicles have intank pumps so it must be possible.

Re: Factory fuel pump or generic external pump replacement???
Good thought. I pulled my in tank when I went to a carb just in case there was any restriction. I'd think pulling the tank pump after it crashes and installing an in-line would be the answer for any future pump replacements.

Re: Factory fuel pump or generic external pump replacement???
See, that is most likely why nobody has done it yet. If you gotta drop the tank and remove the stock pump, why not just throw in a new pump unit and be good for another 100K plus? That is what I did to the 98. Now the 95 was a different story. I bought a Walbro fuel pump and installed it in place of the stock pump when it died. It was only about $80.

Depends on the distance to the water.
The reason I replaced the whole assembly in the 98 was because I got it brand new off E-bay for $31.50 shipped!

Re: Factory fuel pump or generic external pump replacement???
LOL, your quick, that's funny shit.
But really, if your going to go to the bother of dropping your tank wouldn't one be inclinded to step back and look at the big picture and avoid having to do that again. I would, and there are so many choices of after market replacment pumps, to me it's a no brainer to change it to an inline.

Sorry it took so longer for me to find a pic. Here's one I took while I was POR'ing the underside of my van.

Re: Factory fuel pump or generic external pump replacement???
I put an inline frame mounted pump on my tbi - 'burban. It was a unit from Holley and it was noisy - never had a problem with it. I had already replaced my in tank pump twice and wasn't interested in doing it again.
I have to replace the pump in my Astro now - I'm headed over to the shop to work on it in a few min. - dont know if i'll get it done tonight but we'll see. Maybe I'll just cut an access hatch to get at it like I did the last time I replaced the in-tank unit in the 'burban. This is one of my least favorite things to do.................

Re: Factory fuel pump or generic external pump replacement???
I did it the proper way and dropped the tank becausue I couldn't see the top of the tank clear enough to cut a hatch. I was tempted to put a hatch in while the tank was out but at that point the job was half done and I wanted to be done with it
