CB Radio mounting location

Post by DANVAN »

Anybody have a good place to mount a cb radio in an astro.

I was out there trying to find a spot and its very limited. Its a small unit so it can even fit inside that coin holder below the radio, but sticks out a bit too far and blocks the cup holders. I was thinking about cuting the back side of that compartment to fit it in deeper, but not sure if I really want to give up that space anyway.

Other ideas were on the center console door, and on the left side of the center console, just to the right of the drivers right knee.

Not sure where it will be best and dont want to move it once I make mounting holes. Anybody here have a cb and a picture of where u put it?

Thanks

Thats a nice spot, I will go check that out in mine.

Your overhead console(center) is completly different then mine, but looks like it fits the contours of the headliner perfectly, is it factory? I know the one where u mounted the cb is not, Ive seen them sold in JC Whitney or home made.

Thanks for the pic

That was a factory console. That was my 92. It's gone now. The Shelf-It I did by from JCW.

I just went out and held the cb up there, I like that spot the best so far, I may go with that. I can get power from the console to so there wont be a lot of wire running.

After my last post I was wondering if that was even an astro in your pic, I thought it may have been a chevy p-up.

Thanks again for that pic, I like that spot. Where did u put an antenna. I have a wilson 1000 magnet that I have used for years but was wondering about somthing different, like maybe a bracket off the roof rack, or a rear bumper mounted antenna?? Not sure. At least what I have is already paid for. Just not crazy about scratching up the roof with the magnet.

I took the console down and drilled a hole in the roof on that van for a Wilson 5000.

One other thing I would recommend if you do a Shelf-It. When you take out the passenger side visor, take a piece of strapping and attach it to the Shelf-It and that mounting point for the visor clip. It will stabilize the Shelf-It keeping it from bowing and vibrating too much.

Thanks for the info. Wouldnt I need extra parts if I was goning to make this magnet antenna a permanent mount thru the roof?

I am not going with the shelf-it, I will just mount the cb to the headliner.

Got mine mounted to a milk crate sitting strategically between the front seats. I put my laptop on top, the CB and scanner below and the antenna is mounted to the roof rack.

I tried that Jake with an extra console I had.

I just couldn't get mine to fit right though.

Looks to me like you also had a Cobra 25. It was quite a bit of work to get it on there the way I wanted. Had to modify the CB too and move the mic output to the bottom. Spent quite a bit of time on total project, but worked well in the end. Sad part is that van only lasted a few months after that.

Yeah, I noticed that mod to the mic, it looked like a custom job, very nice.

My cb is a lot smaller, so it may be easier, I will check it out in the morning, thanks for the ideas.

I mounted my 2-wa (non cb) on the side of the hump. then ran the power wires from a dual post battery through the emergency brake grommet, underneath the dash to the radio. Since I don't have a headliner I mounted the antenna in the middle of the roof, and ran the coax inside the window molding down underneath the dash to the radio......

Kinda hard to stuff a President Lincoln in the overhead, as big as it is and as much as it weighs.
