Hey everyone, I think my fan motor is going out.
I'm getting airflow but it sounds like an outboard motor BRRRRRRRRR...
How hard is it to replace this, or is there a known fix for it.
Any thoughts,
Phil

Re: Blower Motor
Not really that difficult to replace them. There IS one screw at the 11 o'clock position that's a PITA to get to.
You'll need:
1 Replacement Motor
1 Blower Wheel (made of metal, not plastic)(aka Squirrel Cage Fan)
1/4" ratchet w/extension
10 mm socket
7 mm socket
8 mm socket
2 1-gallon jugs (empty)
box-cutter or sharp knife
Adequate supply of barley pop
Few choice words applied liberally
1. Remove the overflow and window cleaner tanks. Now is a good time to clean the overflow tank thoroughly. Pour the contents into the jugs.
2. Disconnect the electical connections.
3. With the sharp knife, cut through the rubber coating.
4. Remove the screws and place them in a secure location, so as not to lose them.
5. Remove the motor & blower wheel assembly. (Now you see why you had to remove the tanks) You might have to fidget with the assembly to get it out.
6. Assemble the NEW blower wheel and motor.
7. Reverse the procedure.
8. Test the new assembly.
9. Consume barley pop.

Re: Blower Motor
Just to add to it...when you buy a new blower it will probably come with the squirrel cage fan. The last two I bought for the SPB and the 03 were complete units.

Re: Blower Motor
Thanks everyone, I think I can do it. Do I cut where there is score lines in a circular pattern on the side facing me as I look toward the rear doors?
I tried the barley pop thing before I got any work done and ended throwing my tools, jugs, blower motor and squirrels in the street! Then I proceeded to tell my wife to keep talking while she drove, since she is full of hot air
Joking...

Re: Blower Motor
Yeah cut where the score marks are. If you look close you will see the embossed directions right in the rubber cover.

Re: Blower Motor
Thanks,
Just being back on the boards has given me the confidence to start getting greasy again!
I just picked up a motor and fan for $53 bucks off ebay. I think I'll have to do it this weekend, I'll let you all know how badly I messed it up

Re: Blower Motor
phooey, you'll do just fine. It's one of those jobs you can actually do standing up on these vans.
'89 Astro, 4.3L, TBI. Minor intake and exhaust mods. Rebuilt 700R4 trans (by me). Corvette servo, 0.5" boost valve, police grade 1-2 accumulator spring (shifts fast and solid). B&M stacked plate trans cooler. Bilstein shocks. Belltech sway bars front and back. New head unit, speakers and subwoofer. Needs paint and a new headliner.

Costs less at AutoZone. You guys don't have AutoZone in your neck of Kentucky?

Re: Blower Motor
Hey guys,
Thanks for all the help.
I was able to put the motor in about 15 minutes.
I got home and was going to start working on it but the part didn't arrive on time. So my wifey unit volunteered to go get burgers and when she started the van it threw up some parts on the driveway...
Turns out the tension pully on the serpentine belt decided to retire.
So being in a small town I called the morons at our local autozone so they could waste my time on the phone for 10 minutes to tell me they didn't have it. Decided to call NAPA and got one right away. YAY!
So I was able to put on a new t. pulley; because mobility goes before comfort (put on another sweater honey)
and as I was finishing that, the UPS truck shows up with the blower. Double YAY!
It was an ordeal in the fact that I had just finished two back to back ten hour shifts with only an hour between jobs.
After all that I had just enough energy to clean up and go to bed...
