2005 Astro - Ruff Idle / Runs Rich / V-6 0 any ideas?
Hi - New here, but found your site looking for solutions for my 2005 Astro (searched thread). Great web-site!
Question - I believe most rich issues I searched are on the earlier TBI style you guys are working on. I know that mine is NOT TBI, but I wounder if some of your trouble shooting would apply. Any idea if the 2005's had two sensors (gauge and engine)?
Description:
2005 Chevy Astor Van - 147K (got it with 120K and runs the same)
* Plugs, wires and after-cat CO2 sensors have been changed with no difference.
* Idles very ruff, like you can feel each cylinder firing, uniformly – not really “skippy” (almost shakes the steering wheel), except when cold.
* Warms to low idle.
* Not really any "Raw" gas smell.
* Starts on first click, seem to run "ok" down the road, but it's not smooth (still feel each cylinder firing)
* Inside the exhaust pipe is black
* If you rev-it up, let the RMP's drop, then rev-it again, you get a big puff of black smoke.
* Best MPV is around 15 combined hwy / city.
I can't find a Chilton’s that covers the 2005's. Any ideas??? – Thanks - GaryDee

bump for GaryDee
'89 Astro, 4.3L, TBI. Minor intake and exhaust mods. Rebuilt 700R4 trans (by me). Corvette servo, 0.5" boost valve, police grade 1-2 accumulator spring (shifts fast and solid). B&M stacked plate trans cooler. Bilstein shocks. Belltech sway bars front and back. New head unit, speakers and subwoofer. Needs paint and a new headliner.

Thanks for the replies - I ran a code scan when I first got the van, but I don't remember the code flag on it - but it did make me change the CO2's. I am going to run buy Advanced and have it checked again.GEJ wrote:Welcome to ASV Gary.Have you tried to scan it and got any codes??.
I noticed the other day, usually it's a steady yellow light, but once in a while, under load it will start flashing.
EGR - Does this year have an actual EGR valve? I tried searching for a replacement EGR and could only come up with some type of gasket.. that's about it.
MPG - Most of this vans use is in town (I use it for route work, so it's on the road 2 to 3 days a week) - on my longest trips (about 140 mile up - 30 in town - 140 back) still average's out about 15.5. This is loaded with about 300 lbs cargo.
I will post the codes when I get them scanned later this week.

for me, it was my brand of plugs. I can't even remember what I bought and ran for YEARS and shrugging my shoulders about the rough idle. Then one day a mechanic replaced the plugs with OEM and everything was different. It's cheap and easy so you might want to give it a try.

Here's an update. Since my last post the rich issues was taken care of by new O2's. Apparently the ones purchase from the auto parts store where incorrect. Still have a "check engine", but I will live with it.
The vibrations: We just had an issue with the passenger side motor mount. Apparently something happened (before I got the van) to brake that mount, that in turn broke the engine/mount bracket (that bolts to the engine). Last night I took the bracket out, straightened it and welded the tabs back onto it. New motor mount installed and it's smooth as glass. Apparently the engine was setting directly on the frame transferring the vibration through the whole van. Amazing.

EGR is under the throttle body assy. 2 ten mil. bolts and a plug. they clog and you have to clean now and then on the 95's. Done mine 3 times in 8 years..

If you weren't performing the Thorazine shuffle you would see that he has a 2005, not a 1995. Dumbass!sandfly wrote:EGR is under the throttle body assy. 2 ten mil. bolts and a plug. they clog and you have to clean now and then on the 95's. Done mine 3 times in 8 years..
And you wonder why the white suits don't let you out more often.
