rear end is off the 88 and on the 96, along with new shocks and spring helpers, had to swap the inner brackets from the 96 because bump stops are different, round cones were on 96 and triangular ones on 88.
now I just need to reattach E brake, brake lines and drive shaft, install new rear brake shoes and bleed the brakes and with any luck, back on the road again.
rear end gave out.....

emergency brake cables are different on 88 as are the wheel cylinders and brake shoes..... I replaced the 88 spring and bracket(?) for that of the 96, leaving the wheel cylinder and using new 88 shoes
