Will my 90 Safari AWD 4L60E trans, swap into 95 AWD

Post by smokinsiggy »

I'm having problems with my transmission in recently "brought back from the dead" 95 Astro AWD and wondering if my 1990 Safari AWD 4L60E will swap into the 95 Stro. One would believe it should, but being that the 95 is some kinda hermaphrodite model with mostly nothing else interchangeable, it wouldn't surprise me. LOL!!! The 90 model has close to half a million km on it but works real smooth with shifting up and down, did hard shift some @400k but cleaned it up with maintenance and servicing with Lucas. It would be so great to hear some good news for a change, this friggin black cloud following me for years is starting to piss me off. LOL, :-s

Your 90 does NOT have a 4L60E. It has a 700R4. Also known as a 4L60. The 95 is electronic. The 90 is not. So the answer is no. The only interchangeable transmission for a 95 is................you guessed it. A 95!
Current:
01 AWD - Stock
98 AWD - Stock
Past:
93 4WD - 305 V8 - 5" lift - 31" tires
98 4WD DHC - 10" lift - 33" tires - Onboard air and Hydraulics - Snowplow
92 RWD - 350 V8 - lowered - 97 front clip
92 RWD - 350 V8 - converted to AWD - V6
91 AWD - 350 V8 - conversion van
94 RWD - 350 V8 - sons van
92 RWD - stock - sons van
93 RWD Shorty - project
89 RWD Shorty - parts van

LOL, thanks locdoc for getting me politically corrected on my misunderstanding aka 4L60. At times speed reading usually bites me in the ass.

so what pretell then is the main differences between the 4l60e's and 700r4's?
99 SLT Safari AWD, G80/GT4 rear, Burgundy, 196,000 and counting (strictly AMSOIL) flowmaster 40series muffler no more cat, K&N Kone Filter, roll pan, 255/60/15 rubbers mounted to 15x8.5 inch American Racing Tailgunner wheels, billet grille, CB Radio, Alpine Deck, Shag carpet, the list goes on....
03 Chevy Silverado 2500HD, LB7 Duramax Diesel, 5 speed Allison Tranny, Crew Cab Long Bed, no muffler or cat, 4 inch turbo back and side piped. not too many other mods yet, also addicted to AMSOIL.

I thought I explained it above. 4L60E transmissions are controlled electronically by the PCM. 700R4/4L60 transmissions are not. That would be the main difference. Otherwise they are very similar.

Okay now that we all got it figured out as explained by locdoc. Did a code check and have code 24 VSS coming up on the 95 Stro. I'm suspect that this may be culprit for 1st and Reverse only. Very little knowledge on my part and cannot find resources for test procedure on this sensor. The Haynes manual refers to contact dealer for testing. How about it Locdoc can you help me out here?

You sure it is 1st and reverse and not 2nd and reverse? When something is wrong with the electronics in a 4L60E it goes into "limp" mode. Limp mode is 2nd and reverse.

The VSS is the speed sensor. It is located in the tail housing of either the tranny or transfer case (if AWD). I would check the connections and pull the sensor. A new one should be cheap and who knows, you may find a corroded connection.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck
2005 AWD, 4.10's - sold to skippy

n It very well could be Second and Reverse, no tach, no tell RPM's. Will check connection at trans and change out if needed. Thanks for the support, I'm feeling optimistic that the tranny's should be fine after some TLC. LOL!
