Re: I'm Baaaaaack.
Ok..this is where I appear to be now..remember, I'm not an engine guy...
It seems the original builder used valve springs that were not up to the task. (nor were they the ones I bought, but THAT'S another matter)
3 springs broke, along w/one rocker adjuster nut.
The solutions appears to be to install the correct springs, valve guides and reassebly.
The new valve springs (the ones that were SUPPOSED to be installed originally) are approx. 1/4 of an inch larger in diameter. So the spots where they sit on the head have to be milled a bit, also the bosses where the guides will be going under the studs will be milled to allow for them, hardened rods will be put in and finally the press in studs will be replaced with screw in studs.
That, hopefully, will bring me back to where I just have to get it tuned. When I parked the van (after the 3 vlave-lash adjustment attempts) it was running VERY rich...more as I get it back from the mechanic
Thanks for watching ya'll!

Re: I'm Baaaaaack.
Well...
I got the van back today. Can't really tell how things went as the van ran like crap. I know the fuel's old and needs to be pumped out. But the van's timing seems to be way off...SERIOUS "dieseling" that occurs under ANY kind of strain (I barely got it home) also, the black smoke is still there, telling be it's running HORRIBLY rich.
In the next few days, maybe a week. I'm goin to pump out the old fuel, check the timing, and try to find someone who can hook up a laptop to it for "real time" checking.

Re: I'm Baaaaaack.
Get the light on it, start from there. What about the valve lash? It sounds like it may have never been set right to begin with. I would check that as well as the cam timing. Besides that, what is your fuel pressure and have you checked your spray pattern if the injectors have been sitting? You can build a cable and use this software or go buy a cable. http://winaldl.joby.se/

Re: I'm Baaaaaack.
Good to hear from you again Robo!
Here's the latests update.
I got the van back after a head rebuild. It would seem to be ready for tuning. I decided to LEARN how to do this instead of becoming a PITA to someone who does know how. On Monday, I start. I found a reccomended tuner who told me he'd rather SHOW me how then do it for me. That adventure starts hopefully very soon.

Re: I'm Baaaaaack.
Awesome. Do you have at least a heated O2 sensor if not a wide band? I would advise doing such.

I'm pretty sure I installed the 3-wire (heated?) one when i did the swap..I'll double check. I have been reading about the "wide-band" ones....you like them?

Re: I'm Baaaaaack.
The ONLY reason not to get one is b/c you're running leaded gasoline. Can you solder and do electronics? If so you get the sensor from Advanced Auto and the controller from www.14point7.com. You can do it for under $100. I have built a few of these actually.

Well...it's off to Moate's tomorrow for all the toys to read, emulate and burn chips...this aughta be an interesting learning experience. I'll be asking about the wide band 02 sensor while I'm there...
