P0101 Code

Post by thevalleyboy »

I know there is a bunch of info on the site about the infamous P0101 code but here's another.

So my Astro keep tossing this code - I have cleaned the filter etc. guess I'll have to get at cleaning the MAF - think it needs replacement? Anyway I'll keep chipping at it - suggestions as always are welcome! :-({|=

Not necessarily. I got this code too and my MAF was fine. It's saying the readings from sensor are out of range, ie. not enough air or too much. It could be a symptom of another problem.

check the connector to the MAF sensor, may be something as simple as a broken pin.

P0101: Mass or Volume Air Flow "A" Circuit Range/Performance

Get your timing checked.

The cause of my P0101 was a CMP retard (cam timing) of -15 degrees. The timing isn't adjustable so they have to drill out/slot some component to get it back down close to zero. After that my engine had much more power and ran quieter. Cost me $180.

Another very common cause of the P0101 code is a restriction in the exhaust, ie: plugged cat convertor. To determine this, it is an easy thing to perform a backpressure test of the exhaust thru the O2 sensor hole.

So this back pressure test what kind of results should a guy be looking for? Not to mention I obviously need some sort of guage/meter - will a stanard air compressor type guage do this (I would imagine - it's presscision might be low because of it's operating presures) I also have a dial tire type guage that I might be able to adapt to fit the 02 sensor hole - would this work?

Forgot to mention - I assume this reading would be taken on the 02 sensor above the cat

I do have a scanguage - so I guess I can look at the readings for timing, are the maf and map readings going to help me out?

Okay I have been doing more reading - a dangerous thing.. I guess backpressure readings will be really low - around 1.5 at idle and maybe 3psi at 2000rpm - is this correct - guess I will need to go find a more precise guage.
