New carpets

Post by Mr Singh »

Hey guys,

I put down some new carpet when i built my chevy. The engine cover portion never sat right, I actually dont like the fit at all. Its obviously aftermarket, I got it from ebay.

I believe aftermarket kits are about $250 or so; I did a search awhile back but can't vouch for quality.

I have to comment though, you've inspired me to paint my dash, that looks incredible! Is it special plastic paint so it's doesn't scrape off easily?

So to get OEM fit carpet.. where would i have to go, the dealer?

The paint is done in this procedure.

plastic is flattened with 240 grit, then 400, 600, 800 wet. Plasitc primer is then applied (Upol grip#4). Then high build 2k primer is sprayed on, wet and dried with 800-1000grit. Repeat primer if theres still pits. Pre-wipe and then tack cloth. Base coat then 2 coats of 2k laquer.

Its tough and hard wearing but it depends on your level of usage. My truck is show only.

I just went through changing out the carpets as well. What crap. Nothing comes close to the quality of the original. You don't realize how good the original is until you replace it. It has got to weigh at least 4 times more than any after market stuff.

Yeh. So.. bottom line is avoid aftermarket poop.

Question is, where do we get high quality OEM spec stuff?

I would say J.C. Whitney catalog, but I'm not sure how the quality would be. They usually have a lot of stuff that'll fit Astro and Safari vans.

btw, I want your door panels. :muhaha:

Guess I need to go check the other forums for the newer build. Heard you can't keep a windshield in the van now.

This is something I have looked into quite a bit.. When I bought my van, I knew I wanted to replace the carpeting.. it is just horrible. Now I have looked at a few websites and talked to a few people and they recommended Auto Custom Carpets.. Here's the website: http://www.accmats.com/ Now, they are a bit more expensive, and I haven't bought from them yet, but I've heard they have great carpet. What I like about them is they have the option for a "mass backing" which is what OEM carpet has. Of course that is extra and a big part of the price. Which is why I haven't purchased it yet- kinda hard to cough up $800 for carpet when I need so much other stuff!!

Try to locate an auto upholstery supply shop. They will carry both hard back and soft back carpet. The soft back will mould easily to the curves of the dog house.

First question would be carpeting from front to rear doors best stuff with best backing, where do I find it?

Question 2 ....my 2001 cargo has card board headliner over the cargo area....ideas?
Thought about covering with foam backed headliner fabric with contact cement...make since?

Question 3 cargo side panels are covered with grey moulded plastic covers....take them down insulate behind and cover plastic with ? Headliner material ?

Ill be adding a driver side against the side camper sleeper/couch, a Fantastic Fan through the roof but...need open space for hauling....stuff

Ideas, suggestions please....m
