97 4.3L w engine rebuild problems

Post by pk5066 »

Just got done rebuilding my 97 4.3L (W) engine. First I installed new hydraulic roller lifters and push rod. I didn't soak my lifters before installing them. So here my problem. I go to prime my oil pump and no oil is coming out my push rods. I'm getting about 35-40 PSI with the drill. I have the correct primer tool for SBC engines.

Does anyone have any ideas.

For what period of time did you run the primer? It may take a while to pump up the lifters. On the down side they might not pump up requiring you to remove them and pumping them up by hand.

On a v8 I would put the engine at TDC on #1, spin the primer for a few minutes, and then turn the engine one complete turn (#5 should be at TDC then), and spin it again. This is great with the rocker covers off, since you can see where you do and don't have oil.

I'm not sure on a v6, I'd consider turning the crank 90* or 180* (120* would be idea, and is 1/3 of a turn) and priming for a few minutes between turns.

This way all of the lifters will see oil pressure while the valves are in the closed position.
