Howdy from Wisconsin

Post by Tex06 »

Bought my Safari in May at a police car auction. Have had the transmission rebuilt so far. Picking up a transfer case this weekend to replace the clunking one. Need to fix the ABS, as it activates whenever the brake pedal is pressed, and fix some body damage to make the wife happy.

I'm sure I'll be asking questions along the way.

1999 GMC Safari AWD, 4.3L V6, bought with 99k on it, now have 108K on it.

Oh, and I killed one pheasant with it a week after buying it, taking out part of the grill.

Matt

Make sure the transfercase is bad before replacing. The newer units require special fluid and can make some nasty noises and thunks if the fluid needs to be swapped. Someone who has been through it should chime in, but after the fluid is replaced, you need to do some figure eights to break the clutches loose or something like that.

Welcome........great bunch of people here.

Are those stock 205's on your rig? When they wear out get some 235's ( or bigger?) so you can go into the corners without white-knuckling it. [-o<

ABS activation at low speeds is also a common problem caused by rust in the sensor. Solutions are posted somewhere.

Welcome. :)

If you've got Astro questions, you'll find Astro answers here, thats for sure.

I always wanted to take the Badger Ferry just to do it. But actually I think it would be too long on open water without any land in sight for me. Now I like the short ferry rides thru the Puget Sound Islands.

Thanks for the info and welcomes.

I am going to try the fluid flush first. If that doesn't clear up the issue, I'll swap out the t-case. Picked it up the "new" transfer case for $90, with 80k on it, so it wasn't too bad of an investment.

As for the tires, they are 215/75/15.

Thanks, Tex was a nickname I got in high school and its stuck ever since.

Got the transfer case swapped out over the holiday weekend. Put the GM Autotrack 2 fluid in the new case. Drives very nice now, no more clunking when turning. Now on to tackle the ABS issue.
