Anyone installed a shift kit themselves?

Post by markmitchinnh »

Just curious here: I have a 1992 700R4 its been rebuilt but no shift kit installed, my question is this: can I buy a shift kit and install it myself? If I can, does anyone have a recommendation on which one I should buy? This is going in my 89 Safari with a near stock 350 with TBI. 3:42 rear axle.
Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.
Bought on Monday the 16th of April 2012

I have used several Transgo kits myself. They are straight forward once you decide to tear into it. Also use a corvette servo for added holding pressure. I am not familiar with the 700R4's so I can't say which kit to buy. I know with the 4L60E's I use the HD2 kit.
Current rides:

2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck

The Transgo "HD" kit is a good choice, throw a .5 boost valve in too while you're at it. It is a heck of a lot easier to do with the trans out honestly, but I've done it in the van before. Also consider getting a new separator plate now as yours is probably cut where the accumulator spring is. If it is definitely get a new plate. The 'vette servo is also a good choice as well. would say to put in a trans plug but mine leaks like a sieve. I will probably MIG a bung in and stick a temp sensor in its place.

OK thank you , I have the trans out sitting on a bench so I will build an bracket to bolt the trans to my engine stand and follow your advise. Any Idea on the best place to get these parts you recommended?
