Matt's New Shop
Santa came early!
Yesterday a semi arrived with my 40'x60' shop kit. Yee ha! Looks like it will be mostly standing by Christmas.
My new pole building will have one 10'x12' door for the motorhome and three 10'x10' doors for trucks and toys. And there will be one walk-through as well. The basic building, including the concrete floor, is $41K. The county extorted just under $1700 for a building permit. Excavation was estimated at $1600. Will still need power, as well as driveway work leading to the building. Don't know when or how much that stuff will cost.
Here is what the building site looked like 'before'.
Here's the truck delivering.
Unloading the rafters.
And here are all the presents!
I helped (mostly by staying out of the way) the driver unload and it took about an hour and a half. The driver knows how to set the parts out so the builders don't have to move the materials very far during assembly. The driver did have to take into account the excavation that hadn't yet occurred; we'll see how well he did!
As he is unloading the roofing and siding, I'm seeing blue and thinking about what color I'd ordered. I was pretty sure it wasn't blue. So I mention it to the driver and he laughs and says the blue are scrap pieces to protect the good stuff underneath. He said everyone asks the same thing. Doh!
So, how does this affect my Safair build? In theory, it should help. One of the stumbling blocks has always been the location of my van. It's less than half a mile away in my dad's shop, but it isn't convenient to pack up my tools to go over there to work on it. Forget about tinkering whenever I have a spare hour or two. Once it is moved to my shop, it has a better chance. Besides, maybe seeing it parked in there every day will get me feeling guilty, and cause me to act. (I do feel guilty every time I see it parked in dad's shop.)
As I type this, the excavation is happening! Woo hoo!
Stay tuned!

Very Cool! and congrats Christmas Boy...lol. Will be following along on the build
Re: Matt's New Shop
Congratulations Matt!!!.Now that will take some getting used to having a shop out your back door to do what you want when you want. What is the electrical plans??.Are you going to run a gas line out there for heat??.Maybe water(bathroom)sewer,phone/cable in the same trench??.A two poster lift opens up a whole new area in the work you can do too. Most installers for them want to see a 6" base to bolt to.
Seriously Matt,I'm really happy for you.I looked for three yrs for a rental space that I could afford.Even through it's about 15 miles away,it is sure nice to have the keys to go to a place to work in.
Very cool. =D> =D>

Re: Matt's New Shop
The electrical will come later. I'll run something temporarily after the shop is built, but it will be awhile before I can power that welder I'm dreaming of...1Gary wrote:What is the electrical plans??.Are you going to run a gas line out there for heat??.Maybe water(bathroom)sewer,phone/cable in the same trench??.A two poster lift opens up a whole new area in the work you can do too. Most installers for them want to see a 6" base to bolt to.
We don't have natural gas in our neighborhood, but I may put in a pellet or woodstove at a later date.
Cable WILL come eventually. Phone? I suppose I'll run the line with the cable, but I'm not sure it is really needed.
No water/shower/toilet... officially. That would require another septic system. I haven't completely ruled it out though as I am seriously thinking of building an elevated office in the SE corner.
A lift is a dream... but at this point it isn't in the plan. Right now the plan is to just have covered space to house all my 'stuff'. Too much of it is sitting unprotected now.
Sorry Skip, he's MINE this year!Smiliesafari wrote:You need to send your Santa my way.

Re: Matt's New Shop
Congrats and my sympathies, Matt.
Congrats on an awesome garage. The potential for incredible projects is now a possibility.
My sympathies as well. You'll now have one less justification for why your van is slowly decomposing.
On the other hand, maybe your wife'll get around to finishing the engine swap after all...

Re: Matt's New Shop
The shop is going to be sitting where a large area of grass used to be... In theory, this will cut down on mowing time and give me more time for 'projects'!
