In Janesville, Wi. ( pop. 63,000 ) there is only one Shell station. Not another one for miles around. It has three grades and the top two are claimed to be corn free. Now in Wi., the only law is that you have to meet the octane number displayed on the pump. They don't care what brand it is, what's in it except for lead, or where it came from. AND there are almost no inspectors to check it anyway, in this economy, if it didn't meet the octane standard so we're likely to be getting darn near anything is my guess.

Re: Is Shell Gasoline better?
Ok first of all what most people don't ever know is that gas is brought into each state by either pipelines or by truck or train and then put into Hugh outside tanks for storage. These tanks are so big and take up so much room that each state normally only has one of these depots. therefore if exon or mobile or any of the other gas companies has stations in that state they buy if from the company that owns the storage faculty. So no matter what the station says on the sign all the gas is the same. Also to go even further with this: there are less then 150 refineries in the USA and they are owned by the big oil companies, exon/mobile shell, irving, etc etc and the storage places buy from them so thats how the gas is distributed, stored etc. I did a paper on this in college back about ten years ago and had to call all over the country to get info. Some things have changed but basically its as I said.

Thank you Mark for your input.
I will add that in port cities where the storage tanks are located near the water that the fuel is delivered by ships.

Yes absolutely you are right about the ports and ships lol I can't believe I forgot that I lived in Maine when I was in college.

Re: Is Shell Gasoline better?
We have six gas stations in this town. Two of them are Shell stations, and one of those is almost never open for some reason. However, I only buy from Shell simply because most of the others have been known to dilute their gas with water. I've heard stories about people using these diluted fuels and breaking down halfway home. They pump out the gas and replace it with another store's, and their car fires right up. There are two stations nobody ever seems to have any problems with- one is the Shell I go to, and the other is the station down the street, but I don't know what brand they carry. They have ethanol, though, so I go to Shell. Like a few others have said already, it seems to be mainly about the freshness and the way the station stores it.

I believe that the only way water can get "mixed" with gasoline at a filling station is from a ruptured underground storage tank that is below the ground water table.

Re: Is Shell Gasoline better?
ethanol is made from feed corn (i.e. what feeds farm animals), not the corn you and I buy at the store. Still, it does have an impact on fuel mileage, especially in older vehicles.MrJames wrote:It is my understanding or misunderstanding that almost all gasoline is the same no matter where purchased. WaWa or Hess or the guy down the street may be selling major brands at any time. It depends on the shipments from the supplier.
I also believe that having the ethanol additive reduces mileage. I don't get why we reduce our food supply to make ethanol that takes more energy to produce with that kind of result.
Also, not all gas is the same
my cadillac refused to run on QT gas for some reason. the engine kept knocking (spark knock), kept stumbling on acceleration, and just flat out did not want to run. I had to have it towed twice in one or 2 weeks because it died and didnt want to restart. I switched to BP and phillips fuel and the issues went away.
As for shell gas, I never use it. Its more expensive, and when my dad tried using it in one of his cars ('74 apollo) in the 90's, the car barely ran and had lots of spark knock. Last time anyone in my family used shell gas.

Re: Is Shell Gasoline better?
If we eat "farm animals" and the cost to buy them increases because of feed prices (assuming that is the only source of ethanol) to a point where some can not purchase that type of food then it is an impact by at least price on our food supply even if not directly to our cereal bowls.
How do you explain generic fuel storage tanks and pipe lines instead of one each for Exon, Shell, BP and so on delivered in non company tankers to just that brands service station instead of to all of them ?
