electrical problems-I need help

Ok I bought this beautiful 89 Astro RS I drive during the day most of the time so I just noticed this: Stock stereo works except when I turn on head lights then stereo shuts off completely except for clock. So I decided to install an aftermarket stereo and now I have no dash gauge lights at all. I looked at the schematics in the manual I have and the gray wire basically powers a bunch of things including the clock on the radio yet why does it not work with just one wire unattached. Anyone have any clue as to whats going on here?
Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.
