The other side of life's hill
The other side of life's hill
Well I turned 65 today. I'm confused about how I feel about that. Some of you guys who are that age might be able to give me some insight to that. A part of me says I need to live every moment like it's my last. That I should do only things I really enjoy. That I am on the down side of life's hill with the clock ticking. My father only made it to his mid 70's. The racing operation pretty much runs it's self. So I am running lately hard to prep for the end of the yr,but I really don't need to. Maybe I'll just sell out to two of my life long friends(My partner and his son) and go off to build stuff I want. If it wasn't for the outstanding deal I have in the shop I rent, there would be no way I would stay in the winter weather here in Roch,NY.
It is also a scarey time. To finally be faced with a limited time before death. Those are the facts as they are. I don't know how you guys that are my age and older live with that over your heads. Some input to easy my mind sure would be appreciated.
I am new to all this and I guess I have alot to learn...........
Oh-Dow,Keith,Dean,I do get one birthday wish.Right??. I'll post that in another thread.OK??.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY,Gary. I'm older than you. I'm riding that down hill side as fast and hard as I can. My only regret is that those friends that I've lost aren't here to ride with me. Don't dwell on the dieing part. It's part of the deal. Make peace with it. We're all in this together.

I haven't quite hit 50 yet, but you can't dwell on death. It can hit any time, no matter what your age. Live life the best you can so you have no regrets.

Gary, we're all faced with a limited time before death as soon as we enter this world. This is a fact. Today is a gift, tomorrow may never come, but you can't live your life worrying about it. Do first what you need to do and second what you like to do. Enjoy your time here. Oh- and Happy Birthday from someone who's not too far behind you.

Re: The other side of life's hill
Gary, I turn 65 in 5 days, I retired at 62 & I have had 3 wonderful years of doing what I want to do, I am lucky. I have a small, one person, computer repair business that I built up over many years, this is what keeps me going. Whenever I want I can step away for as long as I want & never have to ask anyone for permission, can't ask much more than that. Now the age thing, my philosophy is this
Death is part of living just as is birth, what matters most is what we do in between the two because we have no control over them. Let the people you love know you care for them & be kind to yourself, nothing wrong with that. Most of all don't worry about what you cannot control, its a waste of valuable time.

Re: The other side of life's hill
I guess its a part of getting older when you first start to actually comprehend that you do only have so many days left. Even at 48 I've had those thoughts because soon it'll be 58 then 68, so since I can't control time I just try to enjoy each day and learn something new or spend time with my kids/grandson, as long as I can look in the mirror and be fine with what I see then I'm doin o.k

Re: The other side of life's hill
Happy birthday Gary,
No insights from me, I'm just 51.
Don't dwell on it, dying is easy, it's life that takes a little effort.
so my father told me.
Hey, it's your birthday. Take the rest of the day off.

Re: The other side of life's hill
Gary you have your choice you can arrive at the pearly gates a tired worried old man having fretted away your last few years in fear of what was coming down the pipe of life.
OR you can arrive at the pearly gates on fire sideways and smoking while exlaiming man that was fun.
You can't stop whats coming down the pipe so enjoy and try and make the best of life.
As my grandfather used to always say "I would hate to get all the way to the pearly gates and look back upon my life and see a piece of apple pie that I missed" this was the same man who would be up half the night with heartburn everytime he had apple pie but it was his favorite.
My grandfather died in a fishing accident when his boat overturned he was 72 and in great shape but had never learned to swim.
My advice is eat a piece of pie, go fishing and learn to swim.

KH-you have always been one of my favorite members. Thanks for the advise bud. Yes I still smoke and choke.LOL.I am warming up to the idea of being semi retired.Spend more time in the shop vs on the beach with my beach buddies.Maybe save up for a winter trip to Florida this winter.Haven't been home since the late 70's.Now if I could only get hold of the doctors to cure some of the things going on with me over just giving me more pills to mask it.Yeah I am working on that one.Like "The Donald" says, someone is going get fired!!.Kidhauler wrote:Gary you have your choice you can arrive at the pearly gates a tired worried old man having fretted away your last few years in fear of what was coming down the pipe of life.
