Fixed check engine light by accident

Post by Captn. Crunch »

My 99 Safari AWD threw a cat code right after i bought it used. I brought it to the shop and they put new exhaust system in. (the muffler was shot too) After about a year the light came back and the code was the same. I was a little upset with the sting of a $1000 shop bill still fresh in my wallet but the van was running well so screw it... A few days ago I developed an exhaust leak. The bracket welded to the pipe right after the cat had failed leaving a hole in the pipe. I patched the pipe with a piece of sheetmetal and a couple of stainless hose clamps and the light went out. It seems the weld had been failing for quite some time allowing ambient air to skew the second O2 sensor, throwing a code. I never heard it till it failed completely. So if you are under your truck, maybe you want to put this on the list of things to check
