Honestly it's hard to go wrong with virtually any of them. Lots more power and higher MPG seems to be fairly consistent in other platforms than "old world" designs. Even though you can pick up some HP with different intakes/heads they can all produce good HP it seems. Not only that but virtually no weight penalty over a 4.3L even with an iron blocked engine. You'd come out under the 4.3L's weight with an aluminum blocked engine.
I'd guess to venture the biggest headache is accessories overall, and making sure that everything clearances. If I hadn't started hoarding parts years ago it'd be the way I'd go unless I was doing a direct (Vortec to Vortec or TBI to TBI) swap. Even then I'd be tempted.
