Re: Wider rears??
Not really dumb, thanks, just uninformed. I'm driving a 2004 Safari SL 2wd and I'm just trying to figure out how wide I can go with stock alloy rims. Just don't like the skinny tires on the back. Strictly a looks thing. Thanks for the responses so far.

A 205 is not a stock size for an 2004 van.
Stock size would be 215/70 16
You will also want to keep in mind the 4 Wheel ABS System, that relies on tire rotation speed.
Good Luck, Jim

Re: Wider rears??
You could go to a 235/65R16, 245/60R16 or 255/60R16 tire and it would be close enough I think the ABS would still be happy.

Its the "I Think" part that I would like to know for sure.LiftedAWDAstro wrote:You could go to a 235/65R16, 245/60R16 or 255/60R16 tire and it would be close enough I think the ABS would still be happy.
If I knew that, without a doubt I would throw some fattys outback in a minute.
But... On the newer stuff (4 Wheel Disc) I just don't know.
Who will be first, or who knows for certain?

Re: Wider rears??
The ABS will still work just fine. The ABS for the rear wheels is read from the sensor on the tailshaft of the transmission. I changed my rearend gear ratio from 3:42 TO 3:08. The ABS still works fine even though the tailshaft is now turning at a different RPM than it was with the 3:42 at any given speed.

Re: Wider rears??
I had abs on my 94 rear drive Safari and it had 215/70R15 on front & 245/60R15 in the rear and I never had any problems at all.
Recently bought a 1989 Astro RS from Florida. Replaced stock engine witha 1997 5.7 vortec with TBI and replaced transmission with rebuilt 700R4 with mild shift kit.
