Ok, this is useless without pics. Lets see that A/C unit installed.

Ok,,here we go with a few update pics,,I think. :yawinkle:
Keep in mind, this will be totally covered with a plywood box all the way across van and then covered with carpet. The only part of what you see in these pics that will be showing is the top cooling vent and front intake. The box covering all this will have a built in duct to cover back of AC unit exhaust which will exit through the floor to outside. The drain hole you see on the back of unit will have to be plugged of course. The drain is now on the bottom of case and drains through floor.
Works great but will have to change out alt. Pulls down real bad when you first turn the unit on.

This is the AC unit, 1800 watt invertor and new battery location.
Keep in mind, this will all be covered and nothing will be seen.
Image

This is what will show after being covered,,,the cooling vent and front intake. Filter pulls straight up so won't have to remove the AC to replace filter.
Image
Different for sure but it gets the job done and no pull on engine and no factory AC to try and keep up. When the unit fails at some point, just throw it out and about 99 bucks will put you back in biz.

I like it brother, is it stock ( who cares ) it does the job.. and it doesn't have any of the rediculously high costs of maintaining like the OEM setups do ( at least up here in the land of salt ) getting your A.C worked on at a dealership costs a small fortune due to the regulations dealing with refrigerants whereas you have completely negated the A.C guy outta the picture ( sorry A.C guys, don't worry there will still be plenty of people willing to pay the crazy dollars to keep their A.C flowing ) Like my Dad who has dropped over 2k in the past two years getting this done and that done ](*,)

Let me know how it works Larry I can see myself doing something very similiar

Glad you guys like it. Kind of thought I'd be shunned from the site after this deal. :muhaha:
Keith, you're right,,seems everytime you have to get major work done on one, it's 600 bucks, then another 600 and then another. The OEM in my van had been totally replaced and never did get it where it would last more than 6 months. ](*,)
We'll let ya know how it is over time but I don't know what could go wrong,,we'll see.

That's genious!!!
I take Kabey to work with me and he ends up sitting in the van. He likes it, it his van.
Throughout the day I end up having to move the van to the next bit of shade so it stays cool for him. Lately it's been pretty hot out +30c so I have been leaving him at home alone, which I don't like doing.
If I wired this up so it worked off the inverter or 110ac plug in I could just plug the van in at work and Kabey would be the coolest dog around no matter how hot it gets.
I also like the $99 complete rebuild. You can't even recharge an a/c system for $99.
Thanks Larry, good idea.

Got a cabinet maker buddy of mine who's coming over to build the box for this set up. Will have a few compartments here and there. With the duel Dynamax mufflers you can't hear the rear door speakers so may move them and intall in the box also.

I'll admit I questioned this project Larry. My concern was converting enough power to run an AC (alternating current) unit reliably. (I still think if there is an issue down the road, that will be it.) But I gotta say, I like what you have done and I like the idea of it. Like you say, if the A/C unit craps out, you just replace it with a new one. $100 is less than any trip you would make to the shop to have a normal system repaired, that's for sure. Keep the pics coming and I'll be watching for a reliability update down the road too! =D> =D>

I'm thinking the same thing, except since I rarely use the rear doors I am going to mount the unit across the back just below the windows with speaker enclosiers and a place to put stuff.
That leaves my walk through area between the front seats open. I can also tap into the rear overhead a/c ducting. I'm going to fully enclose it with some extra room so if it does need replacing in the future I won't be stuck with having to by the exact same unit. I'm also going to shop around for a unit that can be modified so the controls can be remotely mounted up front somewhere out of the way.
Very cool idea Reb, I have allways disliked leaving my dog in the van all day. Even though the van is white, I leave the windows open and he does get out during coffee and lunch breaks, It can get warm in there on a hot day. This will be perfect as there is almost allways a plugin somewhere. This will make the big newf a very happy boy.
