Anyone selling bumpers now?

Post by Herbie »

So I hadn't been paying attention, and recently went looking to see about aftermarket bumpers as a foundation for the next phase of things I want to do to my van.

Is it just me, or are there no longer any bumpers for sale? The old Overland Vans tube bumpers aren't listed there. It looks like Boondox "inherited" that set of products, but their website is "in transition", with no contact info posted.

Bummer.

Was really hoping not to have to go "full custom".

If you want to spend the money and add the weight, a couple of ARB bumpers will fit with fabbing your own mounting brackets. Das Mule did one for SilverBullet1997 and 97cargocrawler did his own.

Hi,
Bumpers are not easy to find. The Astro bumper mounts are unique.
The one good thing is that Astro is wide about 76" like a full size Chevy truck.
In comparisin the S10 Blazer or Land Rover Discovery is about 4" narrower.
There is a distinct curve in Astro bumper which also means curved surface at bumper to frame bracket.
To make custom mount you can use cardboard templates and then have a machine shop cur and bend some 1/4" thick steel brackets.
Lots of work.

Hi,

If you have time, please post some photos of the bumper mounts that you made.

Thank you,

According to Wikipedia, the Astro is roughly the same width as the 1998 Chevy pickups and they both featured a grill/headlight combo that's fairly flat across where they meet the bumper. Bumpers for these trucks look like a good place to start then add some custom mounts.

Das Mule uses an ARB from FJ Cruiser, 97CargoCrawler used ARB 3462040 for Chevy/GMC 1500HD-2500HD-3500 2003-07 if that helps.

This company, http://www.sos-offroadconcepts.com/, is right around the corner from me. He mostly does Tacoma trucks, but offered to make me one, (he thought the van idea was cool). $800.00 for steel, $1200.00 aluminum. That includes a winch mount provision. His work is first rate. I'm supposed to go back in March for a pattern making. We'll see how it goes.

A cap was welding on the front with bolts welding in it to attach the bumper and there is a piece of plate on the tops on the frame horns that the body bushing pass through which is also wielded to the mounts. next time i'm in there i'll get pictures on the finished mounts.

Happy New Year,

My 2003 4x4 Astro has front winch now and Timbrens front rubber springs. But front suspension to weak for the weight.

Since my spare tire is inside van, I may investigate a stealth rear bumper mounted set up for winch.

The OEM 2" receiver looks promising to allow a Curt winch plate #31010 to mount under the area previously occupied by the spare tire. Just install the 2" tube of Curt into the forward side of the OEM 2" receiver which is open at both ends.

May need to remove the OEM metal tube and shaft that used to lower the spare tire.

Hi,

Rear stealth bumpers for Chevy trucks such as Road Armor PN 31200 B weigh 200 lbs.

The Astro OEM trailer hitch could support a winch tray mounted the opposite way to tuck it up underneath where spare tire used to be.

Here is photo of the nice void created with spare tire removed.

Still need to make a card board mock up and measurements to check feasibility of the concept.

Also, would need to cut slot in OEM bumper to mount fair lead plate or rollers.
