Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, '94 Safari

I broke the plastic harness off the original on my '94 Safari and replaced with a BWD WT300 - the code is reading 15 (indicating a problem with the sensor or the circuit) voltage reads 5 volts at the connector - seems the part must be bad . . . has anyone else had trouble with these after-market parts?
