Can't turn key in ignition swtich

1996 Astro 4.3l auto

It starts almost instantly when it turns over. Fastest starting gas engine I've owned.

Twice in the last week, I've not been able to turn the key in the ignition switch. I made sure that the key was completely seated, and wriggled the steering wheel. Parking brake was set both times. Driveway has a mild slope, rear end maybe 10" lower than front end.

First time: Battery was dead. I put the battery on a charger. After an hour, the key turned.

Second time: Front end was on jack stands so I could get better access while flushing coolant. Key wouldn't turn. I removed jack stands. Then I could turn the key.

Does anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this?

Thanks.

Hi,

You could spray just a bit of graphite Lock Lube into the key mechanism.

Is it an OEM Chevy key or a hardware store aluminum key?
Be gentle with the key.

Good that you wiggled steering wheel but I don't think Astro has the GM steering wheel security pins like Buick and Pontiac and other GM sedans.

Good luck
