Swapping ('98) 5 lug rear xles into newer 6 lug ('03housing?

Post by WE7X »

I have located a GT4/G80 rear end in a 2003, but it has 6 lug axles and disc brakes.
My '98 has the GT4 ratio (3.73), with open diff. Will the '98 axles fit ( and work properly) in the 2003 housing with the G80 locker?
Spline count? Spring mount issue? General incompatibility?
I can have the whole 2003 rear end very cheap, but I don't want to have to carry two different wheels for spares...
I also found a '93 with the GT4 ratio and G80 locker, but I think I read that it is not compatible.....correct or not? I cannot find anything definitive now.

No, the length of the axles is different as is shaft/bearing diameter, mounts on the ends of axle are different as well which will affect if you try to swap brakes.

Another GT4/G80 rear axle I found is from a 1993.

Digging much deeper into the archives, I found some posts that seem to indicate the complete GT4/G80 axle from a '93 should work, but since it is on composite springs, I understand I will also need to retain the original springs, spring perches and shackles from the '98 setup.
Is this correct, or am I missing something?
Thanks,
