Dutch door spare tire holder -my design

Post by markinnh »

So I recently swapped from barn doors to dutch doors then I had the problem of where to put the spare tire. Before I swapped the rear doors I did however have a door mount spare tire carrier: like the one shown on this link: https://www.ebay.com/p/1228272465?iid=1 ... L4QAvD_BwE
I had also bought two of these hinges shown here: https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Door-H ... 904-Z.html
I cut the center section the area the wheel bolts to from the barn door carrier and after many measurements and trials I welded the center section to the hinge. I had to add two spacers to get the hinge to sit properly against the door and still be able to hinge the wheel/tire away from the door so I could open the hatch. I added 1/8' steel both to the inside of the door at the bottom for the hinged section to bolt through the door then I also added a section of 1/8" steel to the top of the door and used a hood pin with clip to hold the top of the holder to the top of the door. I had to add a small spring and a poly bushing to the top pin so it soaks up any vibration from the door from the tire.
