95 GMC G2500 - Rear suspension sagging

Post by LittleGiant »

While doing some more checking and creating a list of things to be done to my soon to be new home, I noticed the back end sags a bit. Nothing horrible but noticeable to the keen eye. I see that it has shocks, coil springs, and leaf springs. I'm curious of the 3 which would be the major cause. Shocks are a very simple fix. Springs and coils not so much.

Shocks have nothing to do with ride height. They only provide motion damping.
You said the rear end sags. The rear has leaf spring suspension, right? They just wear out after time. Especially if the van is carrying added weight or towing.

Coil springs?
Coils in the front, leaves in the rear. Leaves are easy to beef up or replace. If you have a coil in the rear it is aftermarket, like a coil over shock to carry more load or fix a problem.

I have the same issue with mine. I found the problem is, they come with 1300lb capacity springs from the factory... when they are an empty cargo van. Then a conversion company adds all the weight to it and never upgrades the springs. There are stronger springs you can use that will actually hold the weight.

I have found some that are 2K capacity from Rock Auto. The shipping cost is pricey. What are you doing about your situation?

I got new for my astro at SD Truck spring, Google your part # and shop around. Got Amazon Prime? let them pay the shipping.
