Burning OIL smell upon acceleration or climb

Can't drive with my window down because every time I accelerate hard or begin climbing a grade the cabin fills with burnt oil stench. I have leaky oil cooler lines for sure, but this seems indicative of a far worse problem. Seems fine when I'm driving in light traffic. 1997 Van has 172,000 miles and was well maintained until I got hold of it. Any ideas? :-s

What amount to smoke do you have coming out of the oil filler tube with the cap removed when you rev it up a little ?

I have 1 idea....You are going to have to get underneath and look for the leak! Fix the oil cooler lines if you think those are it!

here's another idea: rear main seal leak dripping into the torque converter cover. the drain hole in the cover is close to the y pipe. If you see motor oil on your tranny pan, your rear main is leaking.
'89 Astro, 4.3L, TBI. Minor intake and exhaust mods. Rebuilt 700R4 trans (by me). Corvette servo, 0.5" boost valve, police grade 1-2 accumulator spring (shifts fast and solid). B&M stacked plate trans cooler. Bilstein shocks. Belltech sway bars front and back. New head unit, speakers and subwoofer. Needs paint and a new headliner.
