more questions cams and tuners

Post by k120189 »

so im looking to get alittle more power out of the van...
after searching the web i think im going to get a comp cams #18-119-4
http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp%20Cams/249/18-119-4/10002/-1
http://www.compcams.com/technical/Catal ... 18-121.pdf

on the comp cams page it says only up to the 97 4.3 vortec....is there any reason it wont work on my 2000?

EDIT:never mind...it says non-comp controlled...i guess i'll keep looking.

and for those people with tuners is it worth the 300+ bucks for one and what kind of horse power am i looking at gaining....

thanks in advanced

Your biggest gain would be with a rear end gear change that you would want to do with a V8 conversion anyhow.

The tuners are really only good for making your wallet lighter. This in turn makes your van faster! With 3.23's and wanting to lift it, you MUST re-gear as Gary said. If you go to 4.10's you will feel like you installed a V8. Anything else won't make hardly any difference. Of course for enough cash, you could make the 4.3 into a 300 HP monster!

so what am i looking at price wise for gears? and would 4.10's be too low for the highway driving i do? i do a lot of 60mph+ cruising in fact i live right off rt7. which is the main highway of the Berkshires. cause all that high rpm driving would kill my gas mileage im sure.

Not with the O/D tranny you have. The mpg isn't that much of a change. What is does do is allow your engine to operate more in the power band of it and become more effective.I owned a very high dollar 4.3 once and got to tell you it costs tons to get more power out if these engines.Your far and away better off getting to use the power you have on tap already and with your current gear set you not getting to use that much.

With the hills we have on the east coast, 4.10's will not hurt mileage at all. Once you get to larger tires, you will need them just to keep up to speed on the highway.

Last summer, zam drove my 95 2wd from our place near Oswego to PA for NECO 2007. He pulled his pop-up camper and was loaded down with wood, gear and all the bikes. He averaged about 20 mpg towing and almost never shifted out of overdrive on the hills. These vans just run so much better with some rpm's on the 4.3.

Figure about $200 for gears, $100 for master install kit and anywhere from $250 to $500 for labor.
