signs of fuel pump failure?

Post by crash »

just wondering what are some of the early signs, if any, other than 'it dies' LOL

since i got my van a year ago the fuel gauge has never worked right, it read correctly sometimes (maybe 70% of the time) and other times the needle was bouncing around all over the place, dead empty to more than full. it seemed to be bouncing more when parked and running than while driving, actually, in thinking about it .. it was always correct and never bounced while driving.

i recall reading something about 'fluid in the gauge' that causes this sort of thing??

like i mentioned, here we are nearly a year after getting the van it and it seems like the needle is now stuck (95% of the time) just above 3/4 of a tank. even when the van is turned off the needle stays there. yesterday we were out and when i'd stopped to pick up a coffee jen said that it was jumping around again right from empty to beyond full. of course when i was back in the van it never moved from the slightly above 3/4 of a tank.

is the simply a voltage issue from the pump to the gauge? .. i'm not really sure i understand 'fluid in a gauge' causing it to bounce... or am i saving for a new fuel pump?

any help or advice would be great.. thanks!

I don't recall reading about any correlation between the two,per say. When fuel pumps go they usually just die, although some have remarked that the fuel pump noise was different than normal just before the pump bit it.

Mine actually showed signs of an impending death. The van would just shut off while going down the road. It would then start back up all while moving. I figured I better get it changed out before I get stranded!
