Ole Yellar's rearend

Post by GEJ »

My 1985 Astro didn't have the glove box that was the orginally on it.I had a flat on the driver's side rear at my home and I went to change it yesterday.Loosen the lugs while it was on the ground and jacked it up.Once I got off the tire I went to tighten the lugs and the wheel didn't turn.Got me to thinking I wonder if this thing has got a g80 posti. So here is the question,if you have one wheel off the ground and one on the ground and the one off the ground doesn't free wheel, does that mean it is a G80??. :-k :-k

...In park, both wheels off the ground...

G80: You can turn one wheel very slowly, then start to go faster, and clunk! it will lock solid and stop the wheel. I can't remember if the other one spins backward for sure, but me thinks it does. :dunce:

Posi: (clutch style) In park, you can only turn the wheel with force, the amount of force roughly equals the preload on the clutch pack. I've seen from 0 (worn out) to 250 ft lbs.

Detroit locker: You can rock a wheel back and forth, and it will unlock and freewheel. You can hear the dogs click. Once stopped or slowed, it will lock back in.
The thing with a Detroit is that you can have a wheel spin faster than the ring gear, but never slower. That's why they are scary when you get off and on the throttle in a corner. I'm not sure why only one wheel can freewheel at a time...don't remember. Some retro-fit lockers work this way, too.

Open: In park, turn one wheel, and the other turns freely the other way.

I don't know anything about cone-style diffs.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Take your VIN to the dealer and ask for a copy of the RPO codes.
