What is this?

Post by chemist »

My friend has a 96 Astro (4.3L V6 with AC). It's making a rattling/grinding noise. I think this is related to the AC compressor--could be wrong. But, we've traced it to a plate between the pulley and front of the unit. See photo below. Can anyone tell me what this plate is and how to fix this other than replacing the unit.

If I'm right, and the only way to fix is to replace, is it possible to exclude it from the belt path with a new belt?

That's the A/C compressor clutch. I've seen repair kits sold for just the clutch, but I know a lot of folks just replace the compressor

My friend brought up an interesting point. That plate seems to move freely, and the front of the unit, with three srew holes, seems to have moved at least a quarter turn since he snapped the photo. Can these just be removed for now and leave the compressor where it's at to free wheel?

You can't pull the clutch apart to allow it to free wheel. It will come apart. You will either have to live with it, remove it and replace with an A/C delete pulley or get a new clutch and install it.

If you decide to install a by-pass pulley, let me know and I'll pass on the one Keith sent that we thought would fit my 89. No charge.
Better email me if you want it. Not on here much during the week. astrohotrod@yahoo.com

](*,) Man, do I wish we read that post earlier. He already spent the $40 at Advance Auto and we did it last night. Well, thanks anyway. You are far too kind.

Anyway, the job is done, and now I have to write a procedure in the general section. Not as many photos this time. Sorry.
