Deano, SAS kit for S10 Blazers work for Astro?

Post by T.Low »

I still don't know how different the Astros are from the S10s and Blazers, if at all. Do you think this kit will work for an Astro?

Thanks Dean.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the Jeep Axle is a lot more narrow than our vans....

Dean is the expert of course, but Logan is right, Jeep axles aren't wide enough. The near-perfect axle is from a mid to late 70s Ford F-150 (or 78/79 Bronco).

I do like the idea of coils, and the F-150 axle is set up for them already!

The Jeep axle is too narrow for our vans. It has a width of around 60" where we need around 67-68". Like Matt said, the Dana 44's and Dana 60's from the late 70's F150's, F250's and F350's are perfect for our vans.

As for using the SAS kit itself, I have no idea on the frame specs between the M/L vans and the S-10's. I wish I had access to the kits for measurement purposes. I bet a kit could be modified slightly or pieced together for a SAS kit.

The other thing to look at might be a similar kit for a fullsize Chevy. I imagine somebody is offering a coil spring/straight axle swap for them. (Again, you would probably only be interested in the mounts.)

Edit: Here's one;

Hello Gary B,
Your thread caught my eye, since Im in the process of building a '28 Essex 4 door. The color scheme is the same as my original paint, but Im thinking of a different color when I get ready to paint. I'm a long way from that point right now. I have a question for you about the Camaro rear you used. I'm considering an S-10 rear for mine which is 61 inches from flange to flange Do you know the axle width from wheel flange to wheel flange ? and am concerned about having my tires completely under the fenders. I can't tell in your photos if yours are completely under in the rear. I've ordered a TCI front clip for mine, because I want the coil overs in the front."

Oh, the things you come across while researching on the internet. Now who could this guy be talking about?:

"Maybe when they get a little older you might see some convert to solid axles. But as of right now I had no plans. I seen a guy do a solid axle swap into a astro van for wheeling! [smilie=bowdown.gif] "
